New LIHV advice

Hi,
I need to replace my Protek 4S 4200mAh 100C batteries. I used them in MBX8 Eco.
I like them but want more Power and runtime. I have also used them 2-3 seasons to time for something new.

I have looked at:
https://www.amainhobbies.com/protek-...118-18/p709247
https://www.amainhobbies.com/reedy-z...c27341/p897223
https://www.amainhobbies.com/maclan-...cl6007/p739591

What do you Think?

Thanks in advance!

In Europe I think it's easier and cheaper to find Intellect lipo's. I think they supply reedy and maclan for their lipo's, so quality-wise I would expect them to be the same.
Their 2019 line up has only a 6000mah model, the 2018 line up has a LCG 5200 one as well, which can be found for 100 euros ( google ÍPCC4S5200HV3 )

Looks like SMC has new packs coming out.

Thank you! I placed an order for 2 sticks to see. They only cost £79/stick so very cheap as well.

Get a 7000mah 60c battery. What motor/esc are you running? 420amps..

Juglenaut 07-03-2019 06:16 PM

If you used the batteries heavy and they are high on cycle count chances are that any new decent MAh 80c plus batteries you will see an immediate improvement. I am not going to really recommend any high C rated battery without knowing what motor or esc you got going on in the beast. Most esc ratings are 150/300/600 continuous “900/1800/3600” burst starting torque.

Granted over sizing a battery is a good idea no doubt, gives a safety operational margin. However what one really needs versus what one really wants are two different things.

I have the 2018 5200mah model for my mbx8eco and I'm very pleased with them. I have about 20% left in them after a 12min main without warm up rounds and charged to 4.325V per cell so it's on the edge. 10min mains are no problem.
The 6000mah model would be the safest bet, but it's a little heavier.*

My buggy weighs a little under 3500g with the 5200mah batteries.

Thank you all!! ;)

The sticks are on the way. I grabbed 4 of them.
I have the same set up as you so it will be great!

Belgian here as well! ;)
I have both a 6000mah 2019 model and a 2018 5200mah model. Still have to test the second one, still waiting for some parts for my eb48.4 :(

Yep, you'll be golden :-)
I think I have one of the lightest 1/8th e-buggies at our club.

Cool! Could you weight them both and post the weight please? I wonder how much difference there is between them.
And where do you race?

my oppinion most lipos come from one of 4 factories around the world. with that said i go with a cheaper on the wallet battery. Second a hv battery will give you more power out the gate, but you'll see less run time as your initially using power up faster and that higher voltage. Also if you don't have a hv-lipo charger you only charging to 14.8 normal voltage. You could losing very estimated 500+ mah depending on your lipo capasity.
For more power and runtime i'd go with a battery with just more capasity not voltage. but you could do both.

When I practice, I only charge them to 4.2V. But for races, especially 12min mains, I charge them to 4.325V because it put 500mah more into the lipo and it last longer.

I've tried the batteries below in 1/8th scale buggy and SC truck:

Reedy LiHV 5200mah 110C 4S (best performance for 1/8th scale buggy so far)
Reedy LiHV 6400mah 110C 4S (doesn't fit well under the body on my Xray XB8 2019, its too much battery, does change the handling quite a bit, I dont recommend this one for racing)
SMC Lipos 8200mah 120C 2S (have been great for practice so far, and seem to offer best price to performance ratio for my sons SC truck)
Maclans LiHV 8500mah 120C 2S had some of the best performance of all, however I had a battery post melt on one of mine. (the remaining one is now our best performing SC race battery)
Protec 4100 LiHV 120C 4S seems to be the best performer for 1/8th scale buggy qualifying. However, I notice the loss of power near the 7 minute mark, so not great for 10+ min mains.

These are not time tested results, only recent SC truck racing and E-buggy for this year. I charge all LiHVs at 15.2V target, and have noticed the LiHV's do outperform the Lipos out of the corners and at top speed. I run the Tekin RX8 and 2050KV motor de-tuned to about 60% in my buggy. My son runs the Tekin RX8 Gen2 with Pro 4 HD in his SC truck, it really gets moving with that Maclan 8500 LiHV. We get asked if its a 3S all the time, nope 2S LiHV! lol. Thought I'd post up our recent findings. Have fun!

Keen to pick your brain on the Maclan Racing LiHV Graphene 8500mAh 120C 7.6V Race Formula Battery - currently running new Mugen MBX8 Eco with Hobbywing Exerun XR8 Plus ESC & 1900kV Hobbywing Motor - will this battery be a good combination for competition and general bashing?

Link:

Any help would be appreciated, as I am back in the game after 5-6 years out of it.

Cheers Frank

For the Eco you would want to run the 15.2v LiHV or similar. The Hobbywing Exerun XR8 Plus ESC & 1900kV Hobbywing combo is literally perfect for that buggy, I've heard good things from people who run that. For bashing or track practice I would probably recommend a cheaper but still good option of the 14.8v SMC brand Lipo for e-buggy. ( https://www.smc-racing.net/ ). I have no affiliation with them, but I have two of the batteries, and am happy with the price to performance ratio. I would not run the Maclan Racing LiHV Graphene 8500mAh in a 1/8th scale e-buggy, 7.6v is not sufficient and will fail quick. stick to 14.8-15.2v voltage range for e-buggy. I'm not an e-buggy expert by far, but I have tested the above mentioned batteries to be good. Stop in after you have run what you get, and let us know how it worked out. cheers.
