Looks like 5.0 shocks to me. I think the other guys were testing aluminum caps on the new shocks.

Yeah, just saw that on Amain this morning...WTF happened? Was already going to be a really late Feb birthday present as it was, now I'll have to wait even longer? No bueno, TLR

Last I read is that they were having problems with the gear diff design and weren't happy with it. So they were holding off until they get it right instead of shipping something bad.

Ah, seems like an acceptable excuse...I'll allow it! I'd rather wait and have a better product. Good call TLR!

Has anyone had issues with their shocks leaking? Mine looked like this after just 2 days of practice... No bueno. I've seen this happen before where after the initial build shock swill leak until the seals swell(*cough* Tekno *cough), which is fine. I fully re-lubed all the seals and rebuilt them in hopes such is the case. Just weird, as my G2 shocks never did this, even with new seals(granted this is an entirely new system).

so I know this is asking alot but is there a chart somewhere that shows what crosses over from the 4.0 to 5.0. I can go back and forth between both manuals just looking for a shortcut. does the 5.0 use the same front bulkhead as the 4.0. also the shock towers look the same is it just the same front and rear shock towers as the 4.0 but in stiffizell.

Front shock tower is different, front bulkhead is different. Rear shock tower I believe is the same just on stiffizell

TLR shock seals are intentionally a little undersized when new so that when they swell up after a week they are the perfect size.

We usually soak the seals in shock fluid before installing. Learned this tip from a Frank Root build video a few years back.

I figured such was the case. I rebuilt them and doused the seals in oil before installation. It should be just fine by Saturday for my club race. I wonder if they're using the same seals, and it just takes longer for the seal to swell around the 3mm shaft?

edit: Nevermind, different part numbers.

Honestly, not much. There are a lot of little changes here and there, and they all add up to needing a lot of new parts.

From what I can see, there is 100% compatibility with:
  • The entire driveline, save for the waterfall on the trans case
  • Bearings
  • Turnbuckles
  • Rear shock tower/wing mount
  • Rear hubs, hexes
  • Front axles & shims
  • Front pivot, steel pivot brace & shims
  • Hinge pins & spacers
  • pills
  • wheels
  • springs
Partial compatibility:
  • ~80% of the hardware
  • Most of the ball studs
  • Arms (they fit, but different design)

I think the problem is more significant than just waiting for seals to size correctly.
TLR drivers were running the 4.0 shocks last weekend, and that can't be a coincidence.

Frank stated that the 4.0 shocks on the 5.0 was nothing more than a tuning option. Some guys liked how that landed better than the G3 shocks. Nothing was said about any kind of leaking. I personally haven't hit the track with mine yet, but I am Saturday and can't wait.

I mean, believe what you want to believe. I have a 5.0 and the shocks definitely feel different on the track than the older shocks. I never felt there was anything wrong with the 4.0 shocks, so can’t say the new ones are better, they just have a different feel.
