Default Tamiya Hornet And How I Got Into RC

This is my story of how I got into RC. How did you get into this hobby?

I'm always amazed at just how many of us (mature lol) RCers got started with Tamiya. Thanks for sharing guys!

I had plenty of toy-grade RCs, but a shiny new Tamiya Hornet kit one Christmas morning was my first foray into hobby-grade RCs.

I had a Fox. My friend Paul had a Subaru Brat, my friend Matt had a Wild One, my friend David had a Grasshopper, and my friend Chad had a Hornet. We all started racing with these together. Sometimes it was just wherever we could make a course such as a park or a field. I think those times were far more fun than modern racing at a track. No one took things too seriously. No one ever complained about a course that didn't flow well or traction compounds. No one complained about having to clean their cars. It was innocent fun wherever we could make it.

Great story, thanks for sharing. I don’t know what brand was my first car. It was a hobby grade stadium truck kit from tower hobbies. It had a mechanical speed control. I was around 14 or so. Shoveled snow during a huge storm to get the money. Order from tower over the phone for cod delivery. Good times.

Thanks to everyone who's sharing their stories. I love hearing them. Here's a little bonus slow motion golden hour footage from the same day.

I started my first hobby grade buggies with the Hornet too with its mechanical 3 step speed controller until i lost it when i was in college, the few decades later i it got back with re-released version that comes with improve ESC and purchased additional Grasshopper for nostalgic reason. I love them more than my modern buggies.

My first hobby grade was a Frog. It was used from a friend in high school, '87 I think it was. Was messing around in parking lot one day and hit a bump and the aa batteries for reciever jumped out and lost signal then it went into the street to get run over by vw beetle.... It never worked right after that. I still have it though.

Ouch! I once had a pack fly out my RS4 Nitro Racer. Smashed itself full throttle into a curb. Still have it with a slight tweaked chassis lol.

Nice. I remember drooling over exotic RC cars in the backs of magazines, especially what are now vintage Kyoshos.

I just got back into the hobby with a Caster Racing e-buggy.

Mine was the Frog in probably 1989 or so at 13 years old or so too. Blackfoot came next a couple years later..
