Buggy Electronics help

Picked up a used buggy for my son with hobbywing esc and motor and savox servo. Am using an airtronics M11x and airtronics receiver. Went to drive today and its like the thing was glitching. It will drive for a second okay and then you don't have input to the servo or to the throttle so its impossible to race with and difficult to just drive with.

Any ideas?

Which specific model number ESC and Savox servo? Some of the Savox servos draw a lot of amps so it's possible the ESC can't handle it.

Hw xe 150amp. The savox label is worn off

toast. 06-16-2018 09:04 PM

Try running a capacitor - theres cheaper ones if you dont go name brand

Glitch Buster Power Capacitor

The servo is a 1268sg

as has been said, the savox servos are very power hungry and it could be a simple excess power draw causing the glitch. a capacitor will help with that issue. could also be a sensor cable fault or a transmitter fault. but i would start at a capacitor and then try a sensor cable.

That servo is likely pulling too much power for the ESC you have.... The cheapest options would be a capacitor or an external BEC. There is a note on that servo:

*NOTE: Certain combinations of receiver and ESC have been found to cause "Brown Out" issues when combined with Savox servos. An external BEC, or BEC stabilizing receiver capacitor may be needed for efficient, glitch free operation in low voltage electric applications.

If the glitch buster doesn't help I would try to recalibrate the transmitter to the esc. If that doesn't work I would try a different radio.
And kind of off topic but did you ever figure out why your Outcast wasn't bottoming out?

robl45 06-17-2018 01:33 PM

Tires too big on the outcast I suppose.

I tried cap today. Was a little better for a bit and then glitching . I suppose I need external bec

Make sure the steering is smooth and moves freely with the servo disconnected. Also, make sure the end points are set correctly. A servo trying to push the steering beyond the stops will cause a high current draw on the bec.

The thing is it did this even with the servo horn off so its not just a potential binding issue. I just tried with an external BEC. One that I have used for years on my old Losi LST2 electric conversion. Still same issue. I can move the steering quickly and watch the receiver LED drop out. I'm out of ideas.

Get rid of that servo. Sounds like something is wrong with it. If it is so abused that the label is worn off you can bet that servo has had a hard life.

Mahjik 06-17-2018 07:23 PM

Seems like you need to change either the ESC or the servo to something either side can handle. The servo will likely be the cheaper option.

I wish I had a spare servo to test. Still this is a nice servo . I'm thinking maybe it's the radio itself? I may try to swap in receiver to the outcast and try that radio to see if there is any issue with that one.

You should be able to troubleshoot it using your other vehicle, so you are on the right track. I have never been a fan of Savox servos. I tried them in an 1/8th scale nitro car, and they didn't perform well for long. They were always noisy when they were at neutral, and they are notorious for browning out. A middle of the road Airtronics or Futaba would be my recommendation if you don't want to spend a lot. If/when you want to get into racing seriously, an expensive servo is a good investment.
