Default Holes In Tires

Are they really necessary for 10th scale indoor racing?

If it's clay or dirt I'd use holes in the tires. Let's dirt or water flick out if it gets in the wheel. And let's the foam breathe.

I also find that without holes there is a pressure loss inside the tire which hampers the tires ability to flatten out after a full throttle punch. So after a long straight the tire has ballooned, then you enter the first corner and with the pressure still sucking the tire upwards causes an uneven amount of grip when the direction suddenly changes.

I put 2 holes in each tire. Dead center and on opposite sides before i glue them up.

This may be a dumb question but if I don't have a leather punch, will a body reamer work to punch the holes?

Well, a reamer will make a tear in the rubber. A tear that will probably get larger as you use the tire. A hot nail can be used to melt a hole in the tire if you don't have a leather punch. A leather punch is useful for other things in the hobby. Go to Harbor Freight, and spend the $9.

I have also seen others use hollow brass tubing chucked into a drill to cut perfect holes in pre-mounted tires

who is doing this now? I haven't bought pre-mounts in a long time, but might reconsider if they are doing a decent job now.

What about if the wheel (but not the tire) has holes? Should you still vent the tire as well? Also, it seems like if you're saucing a lot, holes in the tires isn't ideal, unless the holes are along the outside edge - like Drake does.

Different, but related - does anyone put holes in the inserts? I saw Tebo do this recently, but that was the first I had heard of it.

regardless, tires should always be vented, but size of hole can be a tuning option, some drivers place holes on the sidewalls with the idea that they don't sacrifice losing any tread, others prefer the holes in the center of the tread to maximize spinout of debris. Some believe having holes in the wheels is optional and/or a tuning option as well. Holes in the inserts will reduce pack and can be a tuning option to improve traction depending on track conditions, you can also glue the foam insert to the wheels to remove traction as a tuning option, some folks might glue the foams on the front and/or punch holes in the foams on the rear, etc...

There are some tread patterns i.e. PL Buckshots which are directional with a ribbed sidewall that can help reduce side bite or flip around to increase side bite with front/rear/ or both.... many ways to fine tune setups

Since this is about holes in tires I thought I'd share my new favorite shock pliers if anyone is having a hard time finding a hole punch pricey but a versatile little unit. Might be able to get them in stock on ebay.

yes... there is no exception... without vented tires, you risk ballooning your tires with excessive build up of trapped air, this can really throw off the tune/performance drastically.
