Kit or RTR? What type of terrain will you tackle.

Honestly, it would be best to bump your budget up $100 and get the RTR Vaterra Ascender.

I agree on the Ascender. I am building my first Sawback, everything looks good so far other than it doesn't use hex hardware. The Gmade Komodo rtr is $370. I might get one of these Redcat Gen 7 when it is available.

TowerHobbies.com | Axial Racing 1/10 SCX10 Deadbolt 4WD RTR

Although the redcat Everest at $139 is a good bargain and their new scale truck is priced right also.
Or search the fs section for a used one at a good price.

+1

The ascender is an awesome performer and very reasonably priced. Runs rings around the original scx10 and unlike the scx10 II you can actually find it in stock no worries.

That's not a good recommendation. The SCX10 is an old, outdated design. The Ascender is light years ahead of it. If the op wants an Axial the SCX10 II is the way to go.

You can get a Gmade Sawback ARTR for 299 including shipping. Not only is the sawback a great and capable crawler because of it's low center of gravity it also has a tons of parts support.

If you're going to set a budget... set a budget and save up for some of the better rigs.

4-link... Vaterra Ascender, Axial SCX-10II are pretty good. Leaf spring... G-Made Sawback

The new Traxxas looks pretty nice as well.

In the end... if you get serious about this niche... you'll probably end up owning all of them sooner or later anyway.
