CrossRC PG4L Dually I call the Purple People Eater Build (Sorry Long Post )
Well I have been working on this one since October when I got truck for B-Day gift to me by me and others (e-bay gift cards always good thing !) ... The CrossRC PG4L is the 3rd truck in the PG4 line there is an A and S model that proceeded it . I always wanted a scale dually when i scene this one i knew i had to have it .... it's 90%done don't have ANY of electronics hooked up yet or lights installed waiting on sound module to get here first ... (It's Christmas time better to give than receive so held off buying stuff for truck until i got all my holiday shopping done ...) I don't think i ever spent this much time building an R/C or use so much patience or restraint (you know how those little thing that aggravate you really aggravate you ...)
Well got start somewhere in my rambling in this build thread sorry forgot quite a few times to take pic's along the build thread... The only thing that really different about the models that counts to me between models that I care full metal axles housing on the two other models versus the PG4L which was good caused I saved $200 over kit price for other two models
Truck came very well packed and very well organized with-in packaging, but something that might turn off some off was the fact that i guess to save on shipping and box size they made frame on truck into 3 pieces so it fit better in box.. As LARGE as this truck is it came in a box smaller than my Knight Hauler or even slightly smaller box than my Highlift even tho PG4L is a MUCH bigger truck ...
The instruction book was nice well laid out thick book but had one BIG annoying factor all bags were labeled but not referenced in instruction manual if you needed screws from bag 1112 they told you the screws you need but not that they were in bag A or Z of larger build bags they were in slowing down build progress .. Was not that bad but annoying especially if you were new to building models...
Anyhoo started building and it's starts around 2 speed trans which came prebuilt, all metal VERY BEEFY HEAVY but as noted by UK member i used his build as a reference they were light with Trans grease so lubed up well and installed shift servo servo removed 27 turn motor it came with in favor of 23T Hackamoto motor.
Next on to the chassy build ... no issues 3 pieces as mentioned before plenty strong i think at least for how i plan to use truck ..
On to the axles no issues with them till later in build ...
As mentioned by UK member I referenced the front shocks are GARBAGE !! as a matter of fact they would have to move up 5 spots to be considered crap after building them was totally like WTH! lucky for me I had a set of monster truck shocks that were within the size needed to fit the bill though I still plan on replacing them with smaller cooler looking RC4WD 100mm Scale Shocks in the very near future..
I decided not to use the stock wheels to knock a little of the ugly off the Truck. They were cool maybe on a different build but not this one for me .. i did like the fact everything connected to wheels were metal no plastic here !
I finally over a few weeks get it into Rolling Chassy state ...
Shown with RC4WD 1.9" Double Trouble Duallie Rims I love on Stock CrossRC tires which are very good as well ..
Had to do size comparison next to my Monster which is 22" long not counting wheelie bar with 13.5" wheelbase .. The CrossRC truck with body on is bumper to bumper 25.25" long and 16.25" wheelbase and 9.25" wide in front and 10.25" wide in rear from dually fender to fender with body on not counting tires ..
I ended up running into problem with rear wheels.. The way stock wheels mount using cross wheel adapters and axles. The RC4WD wheels were over 1.5" wider over the trucks stock wheels width it came with. Which was a little much for me and and i love super wide stuff. So i had idea that using axles from one of other other non-daully PG4 should fit the bill ..
Again saved by UK builder he mentioned https://greensmodels.co.uk/ They carry more Cross-RC stuff than you could ever get direct from CrossRC own site kits spare parts replacement parts optional parts yep they got it ! and guys were super nice to work with ! I ended up ordering stock PG4 rear axles plain PG4 rollbar almost went chrome and bedrails with a few other things they came with had already ordered and got rear bumper guard and front bumper guard when i got truck from Chinese ebay vendor..
Skip a few weeks worth of build process got it mostly done except finishing details to body and electronics . I went with flat black and Testors Purple-Licious purple and several coats of satin clear coat did not want it shiny.
I ended up having to paint windshield because i spilling super glue on it .:banghead: it looks pretty good to me so not deal breaker plus allows you NOT to see sound box esc/electronics box thing that takes up 75% cab space
Body looking a little more done ... all diamond plate and other Cross-RC decals i used on truck were metal really nice touch by them !
I am an Idiot ! I had Awesome Texas Styled tapered front bumper made for truck but messed up measurement 1 was 1.5" off size i needed ..
I did get it right with having DingSign make some truly awesome custom plates for me ! https://www.facebook.com/Dingsign/
I had to remount and re-remount front front bumper guard after i cut it's mounts before i realized could not use Texas bumper :banghead: then again when i had to make space for winch cut off lower bar on bumper guard so winch and license plate fit well ... In all my builds in all my life I finally discovered the power of Shoe Goo ! i used that crappy on everything now it's awesome !
Also front truck spoiler was made from that hard to open ant-theft plastic package had lying around put diamond plate decal over it looks decent will probably replace it with 3D modeled one I do when I get 3D printer next year .
The rollabr lights are off duratrax scale truck parts I got a long time ago from tower hobbies. I cut off to use on this added carbon fiber decals over top of them because everything better with carbon fiber right ?? ^_^ also had to make spacers for the bottom of rollbar because rollbar was made for PG4 not my truck .. on PG4 shorter bed they bolt to inner tire wheel wells ..
Underneath Truck mounted exhaust tips in a different spot drilled them a little wider to use black aquarium air line tubing i had lying around and mount to Imex Tank smoke unit still need to get some smoke oil .. had trouble with spazstix mirror chrome paint on exhaust tips said to heck with it and ended up painting them same purple as truck and well as parts of winch to better match truck ...
My radio for unit FlySky FS-I6 with FS-IA6B Reciever that i ordered 2 spring-loaded return kits for lrft stick as well as custom decal for radio ..
The Rest are Just Poser Shots really sorry for this long draw out post i'll do better next time when post video when i get it running .. ps. it's snowing outside while taking outside pic's if a few look weird ...
