Is he watching the scale crawler videos or competition crawler videos? Myself I have 3 1/2 Axials (2 1/2 scale crawlers and 1 AX10 competition crawler) and I find that the aftermarket support is never-ending for them. Out of the box they are "good". Theres a bit too much plastic/flexing in some key areas for my taste but perfect for a kid to start with.

My 4 year old has an axial scx10 RTR and loves it. We take his and mine out almost every day

Axial Wraith....It is scale enough to look awesome yet has the capabilities to hold its own against even some of the top Comp Crawlers.
Plus its durable. My 3 yr old and my 7 yr old both have one and they beat the piss out of them.
I switched them to the wraith after the SCX10 Honcho couldn't seem to stay on the wheels with the lack of skilled driving.

Have the "low buck" hook-up for you.. Got one of these for my 7 yr old a couple years back..

He beat the snot out of it for over a year before graduating to a losi SCT and we never broke a thing on it!! For the $130 there is very big bang for the buck!!

Depends on what you put into it.
Stock the RTR has a 20t motor so it can still get up and fly.
Or you can upgrade it and turn it into a race car. Haha. I put a MMP, Tekin pro 4 3300kv, and 3s lipo in my sons setup. It's more speed and power than he can handle. But it teaches him he must learn finger control.

I have 1 I run a rooster ESC and a 35T HH torquemaster that does just fine with the stock gearing. A bit slower than stock but more torque. Another I have uses a SV3 ESC with a 4600 kV motor. Everything is upgraded as it has WAY to much power and constantly flips at full throttle and has even beaten a couple of stock shortcourse trucks in drag races. Albeit short races but wins none the less. It all depends on what you want to do with it.
