Better Value SCX10 RTR or Kit
#1
I know the SCX10 kit is known for having great upgrades over the RTR, but my question really is what's the better value after everything is said and done? This is what I mean.
If I buy the RTR, how much would the cost be to add all the aftermarket parts that either come with the kit or are comparable to the parts in the kit?
If I get the kit, I have to buy an ESC, motor and Rx., but I already have upgraded parts.
Then there's the price difference. $379 +/- RTR, $329 +/- Kit
I don't know about ESC's and motors for crawlers, are there inexpensive but decent options?

A lot of the upgrades that come with the kit are not that great I would go rtr buy the steering link and replace that first. Then you can upgrade to better aftermarket stuff as it breaks or wears out. If you go kit the castle sidewinder and almost any brushed motor will run about 100 bucks. Plus some of the best and most needed upgrades don't come with the kit either such as metal trans gears and cv front axles. The eyes perform well and get you running right out of the box. I started with the deadbolt and loved it.

I bought the SCX10 Trail Honcho RTR about a year ago and the only thing I don't like about it is the radio system. The stock radio doesn't have EPA (end point adjustment) and for a scaler/crawler it's necessary. The stock ESC is decent and you can adjust it a bit using a Castle Link. If you can pony up the $$$, get the kit, a decent radio system (I currently use a non-hacked FlySky GT3B for my some of my trucks and an HPI TF-40 for my SCX10), a good 27-35T motor and a decent ESC. The Axial AE-2 works well (you'll need a BEC when you upgrade to a stronger steering servo) or the Holmes Hobbies BR-XL is really nice. Eventually you'll be upgrading driveshafts (MIP's), servos, diff gears, etc. It's a never ending money pit. But in all honesty the RTR will get you going. Just upgrade when stuff breaks. Tons of info on the RCCrawler forums.

What about the SCX10 Jeep Wrangler G6 kit?
I am thinkng of a crawler kit or RTR but also have these concerns.
What if you get the rtr electronics (ESC and Motor) from amazon or ebay for one of the kits mentioned would it be too little power or will it be just fine?

Any of the SCX10 kits would be great. Like I said before, the stock Axial AE-2 ESC is fine, can be bought new for cheap, and can handle 2-3S lipos. If you're going to run 3S, you will need to use an external BEC. I run 2S lipos on my Trail Honcho with the AE-2 and cheap Axial 27T or HPI Saturn 27T motors with 16/87 gearing. Top speed is faster than I can walk, which (for me) is perfect for trail driving and still has plenty of torque for going over rocks.
