Yes they can.
Do they SUCK, YES they do.
Castle sidewinders are on sale with rebates.
I personally like Tekin FXR's, they are small and have GREAT tunning right from the led's.
A B1R would also be good for 2-3s lipo. I'd go with a 45T motor, great torque AND decent wheel speed. You can use Integy motors, they are cheap and decent for crawlers but when you step up the good motors are $45-$65 a piece.
With crawlers, it's all about weight, stay light, keep the CG low, and setup the rig to steer great and be predictable.
Theres a Venom forum on rcc that has TONS of expertise on how to make them perform.
