Part 1 - Axles
I've had these Xtra Speed AR44 Axle housing since I bought the kit. Finally get to use them. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/798/2...fa30ea43_b.jpg Starting on the work... https://farm1.staticflickr.com/893/2...cd3e4e09_b.jpg Yay... axles done. Like others.. I needed to dremel the paint off the inside bearing slot in the Xtra Speed Axle housings. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/884/4...61df100c_b.jpg |
Part 2 - Links
Them links.... Steering and panhard links... https://farm1.staticflickr.com/813/4...f6a61e05_b.jpg Front axle links... https://farm1.staticflickr.com/808/4...b69e14f9_b.jpg Rear axle links join the party... https://farm1.staticflickr.com/889/4...6892a903_b.jpg |
Part 3 - Shocks
Axial Icons... nothing special to see here... https://farm1.staticflickr.com/899/4...a60f1667_b.jpg |
Part 4 - Transmission
So... the kit comes with that newer transmission. For this build... I am sticking with the kit provided transmission for now. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/863/4...d8b6149a_b.jpg |
Part 5 - Drive Shafts
Will probably get metal ones down the road. For now these will do. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/897/2...0067dbfd_b.jpg |
Part 6 - Chassis
Finally getting around to putting the chassis together. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/804/2...0697648e_b.jpg https://farm1.staticflickr.com/811/4...df2cd69f_b.jpg Used a Boom Racing 25T servo horn for the steering servo. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/889/2...6e4c451b_b.jpg Front Axle mounted https://farm1.staticflickr.com/814/2...9ec55bfc_b.jpg Rear Axle and shocks mounted https://farm1.staticflickr.com/899/2...a021385c_b.jpg Using Hobbywing 1080 Brushed ESC https://farm1.staticflickr.com/901/4...7dede9b1_b.jpg ESC put in place... Bumpers, rock sliders, and body posts mounted. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/790/2...db8f5f72_b.jpg |
Part 7 - Wheels and Body
Going to use the stock tires and wheels for now. Will not be gluing them like the instructions say, as I'll probably swap out the foams and change to beadlocks. Starting on the body prep work... Forgot to take pictures... Mounted the Tires/Wheels https://farm1.staticflickr.com/880/4...19a0a611_b.jpg Finished adding some of the decals and plastic scale details to the body. Mounting the roof rack was a !@# Whoever designed the piece that mounts inside the body should be tortured.... because that's what it was... torture. For some reason this part of the build seemed like the hardest part. The screw holes were too small for the screws and I tried to brute force it. I finally wised-up (hey I'm still jet-lagged and not thinking clearly) and used a screw to open up the hole in the plastic piece while not trying to mount the rack...before finally mounting the rack on. On top of that part of the roof rack was missing a screw hole which was weird. I had to drill out a hole for the screw (passenger side 1st screw of 3) so that I could mount the 2 parts of the roof rack together. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/819/4...f95180df_b.jpg |
Here's how it sits... mostly stock for now.
The SCX10.2 finally joins my fleet of scale crawlers. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/818/4...4fa36349_b.jpg |
Testing some different shoes...
Pro-Line BF Goodrich Krawlers & eBay D-Hole aluminum wheels https://farm1.staticflickr.com/886/2...4687a5e9_b.jpg |
Those axle housings are nice especially for the price, having to sand down the bearing recesses is no big deal to me.
I had the same issue with the roof rack, they should have used self taping screws. |
Nice clean build.

Great build as always, Looks good.

Got around to doing a few updates to the SCX10.2 a few weeks ago. I wanted to try getting this truck finished up so that I can start running it more.
One of the things that always bugged me about this truck was that front bumper that sticks way out front. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1878/...d79b48c6_b.jpg Since I don't plan to really use a winch or have a winch, I thought changing the front bumper was in order. First thing I tried out was to trim the pegs of the stock bumper to see if I could get it to tuck in more. I also drilled out some new mounting hole positions (not shown). https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1894/...9b8cc234_b.jpg It's a lot more tucked in, but I don't like how it just looks like a flat slab jutting out. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1880/...e72417b6_b.jpg Next bumper I tried out was the SSD Rock Shield for SCX10 https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1874/...465ac1dd_b.jpg Rough approximation in differences of clearance https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1854/...9faf561a_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1855/...451db6c6_b.jpg Bumper is solid, looks good, with good clearance... https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1886/...e8f092cf_b.jpg But.... I don't really like the way it looks with the XJ body. I'll probably keep it for use on another truck that has a narrower front. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1866/...22537b37_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1899/...d934182d_b.jpg Finally I decided to try the Axial Dingo front bumper... https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1900/...8b718074_b.jpg This one looks a little more promising. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1874/...60c3283f_b.jpg I like the way that it protects the full width of the body. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1874/...078d32c3_b.jpg Final decision made to keep the Dingo bumper. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1848/...fe3223da_b.jpg |
Getting around to installing some parts that have been sitting in the drawers.
Boom Racing Rear lockouts for AR44 Boom Racing C-Hubs & Knuckles for AR44 https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1979/...284aa97f_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1958/...dcb65557_b.jpg Boom Racing lockout on the left, stock on the right https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1924/...ff180a1d_b.jpg Stock C-Hub on left, Boom Racing on right. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1980/...f32c9862_b.jpg I forgot to take pictures of the knuckles, but it's a really tight precise fit for the bearings. You pretty much have to push it in straight perfectly. If it's slightly put in at a minor angle it gets stuck. All installed. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1960/...b5102dce_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1930/...b7421dd5_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1942/...2f156ba3_b.jpg |

A few from today's hill climb. Rig really surprised me with how well it did today. The Pro-Line BFG Krawlers have also become my favorite tire.

Really a nice looking Axial. NIcely done.

Those tires look great and that bumper should have come on the kit. Nice build.

Another belated post. I haven't driven this rig in a while, but I actually enjoyed wheeling it at CDM recently. I think I might start doing things to this rig again.

Why do some SCX10iis have the transmission outputs centered with the axle pumpkins like this one and others are off to the side?

The original is the 3-gear transmission, which is basically the most common one, and included in all the RTRs. There is the SCX10.2 2-speed capable transmission that was only included in the following. - SCX10.2 Cherokee Kit Version - UMG10 Kit Version My SCX10.2 is the Cherokee kit version with the 2-speed capable transmission. |
