You could start by drawing the free body diagram depicting all the forces acting on the block, then translate the force of the spring into a speed taking into account the forces acting on the block in-line with its horizontal movement. If you can't do that, you have no right to earn a good grade on your midterm.

I haven't had to do this in so long. That means I'm of no real help. Hope you were able to figure it out.

In response to below: It's been over 12 years for me. HA!

Do you have any good notes? If you dont, start taking them! I found that there was a lot of stuff on my finals study guides for algebra 2 honors, geometry, and chemistry honors that we havent talked about or used in a long time. Going back to my notes really helped me finish my study guides. (well, what is due tomorrow , still have more to do ) I really wish I could help, but it has been over a year since I have had to actually do the math for stuff like this. (only a week since I built something like it though)

I got some help by good friend who happens to be a physics major at Pitt. But yeah, i do understand how to draw a free body diagram. Ha, that was the basics of Physics we learned last year.

So, 1) a. is just a simple energy equation. They tell you the maximum spring compression. Find the equation for energy stored in a spring and equate it to the kinetic energy of the block after it leaves the spring.

I'll look at the other a bit later.

I HATE chemistry! I want physics! I spend 10-14 hours every week after school and on saturdays to do PHYSICS type stuff. Chem is so boring, we havent done one fun thing this year. It is all memorizing stuff (ok, the periodic table is handy to know) and equations (yes, I am good at math, in fact I am in geometry and algebra 2 honors. I dont need a 3rd math class. Especially when biology doesnt need like any math at all) I passed physics with flying colors, I have a c in chemistry.

Sorry to rant and stuff, but I really needed to let that go. Now if I could just remember all of those physics equations and stuff.

Had I seen this the other day before your packet was due, I coulda helped ya out since I had AP physics 3 years ago at Latrobe (plus a few physics classes while here at Penn State). If you have any more problems that ya can't get worked out, let me know.
