Unlike you, I was 18 years old and experienced first hand what it was like to be alive in those pictures. There wasn't a day of the week where the mall in my "shithole town" wasn't at least 1/2 filled with people and every store was filled with not only chain stores but also one of a kind family owned businesses.

There's really little reason to regularly go to the mall.

People interested in pure shopping can do it easier on the 'net.

The "mall rats" of today socialize on-line as well...not at the food court.

But it also depends on the particular city. Ever been to Metrotown in Vancouver BC? That placed is packed almost everyday. There is not one empty store in the entire mall, qand there's always TOO MANY people there at all hours of the day.

Hehe, I worked in a head shop in a mall here(anyone surprised?), I quickly grew to abhor mallrats. There were a select few that were quite interesting people, though. I did enjoy the job, worked there for two years while doin' my book learnin'.
