One of my vintage HPI engines has an air leak so bad it was able to idle while I covered the carburetor inlet with my finger. I think I found the source of the leak: The pullstart shaft has a borehole drilled into the end that's inside the crankcase, and a tiny little oiling port drilled through the side of the shaft that meets with the borehole in the end. As far as I can tell this was intended to lubricate the Oilite bushing in the backplate; however, I had previously cut the Oilite bushing to half its original length and replaced the missing part with a ball-bearing, to help support the pullstart shaft and reduce friction since it rotates constantly when the engine is running. Because I had cut the Oilite bushing to half its original length, the oiling port on the side of the pullstart shaft was now exposed to the gap between the shortened bushing and the back of the ball bearing, putting the onus on the ball bearing's single rubber seal to prevent an air leak. That seal had failed and fallen out, allowing air to sneak in through the pullstarter, through the ball bearing, through the oiling port on the side of the pullstart shaft, and into the crankcase.

At least, I think that's what happened. I replaced the ball bearing in the backplate, this time leaving both rubber seals installed, and I plugged the hole in the end of the pullstart shaft so it can no longer possibly be the cause of any air leaks. I also replaced an O-ring in the carburetor and both of the rubber seals on the front crankshaft bearing, for good measure. If it still has an awful air leak the next time I run the engine, maybe I'll just hit it with a hammer and see if that fixes it.

The moral of the story is: If you have to make frequent adjustments to the low-speed needle to get an engine to run properly, the engine probably has an air leak and you should take it apart immediately to look for the leak. After break-in, the low-speed needle only needs adjusting when you change the engine's compression ratio, when you change the nitromethane content of your fuel, or when you make significant adjustments to the high-speed needle; other than that, the low-speed needle is basically set-and-forget.

^Or you could just buy a proper engine(read: Nova) and a starter box, and never ever buy any RTR trash ever again....

Fyrstormer

Nice write up. It does look like a number have checked you build out. But there’s just an overall lack of interest in nitro these days.

5.5t is massively fast as i found out to my cost, about 7.5 is as much as you really need, unless you are running on a large, high grip track.

hmmmm, looks nice on her, but it would look ugly on me. I have a long, triangular face(think upside down isosceles triangle), hers is more heart shaped.

^Ewwww to all of the above, except maybe the 2nd last. The last one is uber weird....

I love how this has suddenly become the fashion thread lol.
It's hilarious how we can go from the 80s to nitro engines to hairstyles like nobody's business.
