Smile [Request] Mentor for B.C's only FIRST Robotics high school team

Hey! We're the Princess Margaret High School Robotics team, FRC team 6008. Our team is comprised of about 12 students, a teacher sponsor (Who is also a huge R/C fan), and a mentor teaching at BCIT. This past year was our first time competing in the international FIRST Robotics Competition and are currently the only team to do so from B.C. Going forward, we would love to grow our robotics team and further promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) in our community of Surrey Newton and the Lower Mainland. We are therefore looking for mentors to join our team and lead the great adventure of FIRST.

The FIRST robotics competition's goal is to inspire young people into becoming science and technology leaders through an adventure of a competition and build season. In Morgan Freeman's words, "The hardest fun you'll ever have."

The robots, which are built from scratch in only 6 weeks, are 5 foot tall, and 140 pounds. They compete in high intensity robo-sports. With bragging rights at stake for schools and the companies that support them, robotics takes on a pro-sports experience. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.

Our team at the moment is relatively small. Our one teacher sponsor has an incredible amount of responsibility from helping us design and build the robot to fulfilling all administrative duties. We would love to have more help and guidance to take our team to the next level. Although experience in engineering or technology fields is appreciated, we welcome anyone to become a mentor. Our team operates out of Princess Margaret Secondary School and meets from 3:00pm onwards most days, so a mentor would be required to be able to reach our school in Surrey-Newton. The role of a mentor would be to primarily help design and fabricate the robot. Other duties could also include helping us plan events to promote STEM and our team within our school and community. Furthermore, securing funds from corporate donations and grants to finance our robot and registration costs would also be a high priority. During build season, the six weeks allocated to design and build the robot from scratch, our lives can become a bit hectic. There is a commitment required from us but the drive to finish an excellent robot in time pushes us to manage our time like we've never done before. That said, Any help and commitment level is appreciated.

Being a mentor at our high school robotics team would mean the world to us. We are currently the only B.C team to be competing in this flagship competition and are thus are proud to represent our province. Just this past year, we've seen the impact our robot can make on how STEM education is viewed in our lower-middle class school setting. Our robot was recently displayed in front of the whole school during a school celebration. The out pouring of curiosity towards the robot was been phenomenal. Elementary students which were being given tours of our school have also been shown our robot and given the chance to play with the it. Your participation in this team will hopefully inspire the next generation of youth in our community to take a look at a career in STEM.
We can't wait to meet you!
