As some of you know I was trying to get this race run at West Ed mall. Unfortunately the dates that I could book a spot big enough won't work for this year. So we will be at the hanger for this one. Next year will be a different story.

I want to thank all the people that volunteered their time to make both races of the ATS series happen. Without you this event would not have happened or be as fun and exciting as it was. With most places struggling for volunteers, you guys really pulled it together and rocked it!

On a personal note, I really enjoyed the race format of qualifing Saturday and running multiple mains Sunday. Running this format it seemed that the mains were mostly clean fast racing! Both fun to watch and fun to be in! It's also great to see more younger racers and women at these events. Watching Carter ripping up the track with his stock car, means that soon the elite racers will be under fire by the youngsters! I also love the location, as I can easily walk over to store and get Motrin, if for some STRANGE reason my head feels like I just did multiple shots of tequila the night before.

Have a great summer, and we'll see you back on the carpet in the fall!

Default The Schumacher Racing ATS Edmonton Round 2 Race Report (Part 1 of 2)

Awesome weekend!!!

Just a little history:

Nascar President Patrick approached me early in the spring of 2014 about his idea for a small provincial race series between the two largest RC clubs in Alberta. The focus of this new series would be to have fun, keep rules to a minimum, save budget conscious racers some money with less travel and create a friendly provincial rivalry.

Patrick was very forward thinking in creating this series with these ideas:
- no actual points are given so you can race for fun and not be too caught up a meaningless points series
- use of NON-Roar approved batteries when everyone else required it
- no tech cause if you need to cheat to win then that’s really sad
- running the Alberta Scale Spec class together with the CTA class with open bodies cause why not
- triple mains for every class and mains so every racer feels just as important

That is how the ATS was born!

Now to thank everyone:

1. Our sponsors:

- Schumacher Racing (title sponsor and chassis sponsor)
- Great Hobbies (chassis sponsor)
- PM Hobbycraft (chassis sponsor)
- Team Associated
- Gravity RC
- Maclan Racing
- ARC
- Xpert RC
- Boca Bearings
- Anwalt International

2. Nascar team: Patrick, Joe D and all the Nascar club members. It was a team effort

3. Gillian for RD'ing the race. Doing a great job on the mic and computer with help also from Kevin, John, Ed and Joe!

4. The racers. I think we had a super turnout from both cities and even 3 SK dudes making the long trek out.

There were 117 entries in six core classes

- 35 Schumacher TC stock
- 12 Reedy TC modified
- 15 Great Hobbies Tamiya Mini
- 23 Boca Bearing 12th Scale
- 10 Maclan Racing F1
- 22 Alberta Scale Spec

Heats were full especially with the big stage as a drivers stand and the competition was intense. We tried something probably never attempted before: 4 qualifiers on Saturday and Triple Mains on Sunday. So that was 7 rounds of racing. Many people took advantage of the open tire rule with the sticky Sorex 28’s or Gravity tires, but some crazy people didn't. Some people used their old D3.5s, many didn't. Everyone still had fun and the people coming up to me about not worrying about what a waste of time tech was too many to count.

SPECIAL AWARDS!

These awards along with local hobby store gift cards were sponsored by Anwalt International (thanks Walter and Robyn!!!). Award recipients were determined by racer votes and presented at the end of the weekend.

Winners were as follows:

- Most Improved Driver: Zander Roy (Only 6 years old!)
- Concourse Best Chassis: Dennis Beck (That’s 2 years running)
- Best Oh Sh$! Moment: Mike San Antonio (it’s gonna cost some money to fix that huh?)
- Tough Luck: Carter Herasymiuk (Not only was it his birthday weekend, but he ended up catching the stomach flu that knocked him out Saturday night so he couldn’t make the Mains on Sunday and award accepted by his dad John)

Default The Schumacher Racing ATS Edmonton Round 2 Race Report (Part 2 of 2)

A MAIN RACE REPORTS: (Planning to submit this to our sponsors)

Round 2 of the Alberta Touring Series was held in Edmonton, Alberta on April 15-17, 2016. The NASCAR Club hosted a great event with 117 entries across 6 classes. The focus of this series in its second year would be to have fun, keep rules to a minimum, save budget conscious racers some money with less travel and create a friendly provincial rivalry. The format for the weekend would be 4 qualifiers and triple mains for everyone.

In the Reedy TC Modified Class, TQ Wayne Mah (Awesomatix) would take A1 and A2 in dominating fashion, with Ryan Berry (Awesomatix) winning A3 to finish 2nd and Joe Levesque (Awesomatix) taking 3rd.

The ATS Finals Edmonton April 15-17-podium-tc-mod.jpeg

In the Schumacher Racing TC Stock Class with 35 entries, TQ Wayne Mah (Awesomatix) again took convincing wins in A1 and A2. But A3 would also be exciting to see who would be on the podium with Ryan Berry (Awesomatix) finishing just ahead of Joe Levesque (Awesomatix) taking a well-deserved 3rd.

The ATS Finals Edmonton April 15-17-podium-tc-stock.jpeg

In the Great Hobbies Tamiya Mini powered by Orca Class, TQ Ivan Chan and Walter “Mini King” Slany having won one main each took it to the A3, with Walter beating Ivan to the finish line by a few car lengths for the overall win. The battle for 3rd in A3 was also intense with Timbulb prevailing over his challengers to secure the final spot on the podium.

In the Boca Bearing 12th Scale Stock 13.5 Class, TQ Wayne Mah was at it again winning both A1 and A2. The battle for 2nd and 3rd was still to be decided between 5 racers in A3 with Ivan Chan prevailing in 2nd and Ryan Berry in 3rd overall.

The ATS Finals Edmonton April 15-17-podium-12th-scale.jpeg

In the Maclan Racing F1 Class, TQ Ian Brooks would win A1 and A2 in both very close battles over Ivan Chan. 3rd place would be on line for 4 different racers with Walter Slany prevailing in the closing laps that would secure the final spot on the podium.

In the Gravity RC Alberta Scale Spec class, TQ Dennis Beck had his hands full finishing poorly in A1 but winning A2. Cal Freeman would win A1 but finish poorly in A2. Three other drivers were in the mix for podium spots if they did well in A3. When the dust settled, Dennis Beck would win A3 securing the overall win, with Cal Freeman 2nd and Ian Brooks 3rd (missing from picture) respectively.

Until Winter 2016 (race date yet to be determined) at the Calgary leg of the ATS……. See you all at the track!
