Default From the desk of Glenn Williams, working on a 2023 race schedule

Hi Guys,

The racers have been aggressively reaching out to myself and Tom, December 12, 2022 will mark the closing of SCS RC Speedway. Sadly, this means no place to run 1/5, 1/8, and 1/10 (Nitro) on road RC cars here in So Cal.

Since 2017, Phil Goodwine and his Family/Crew, provided us with a world class facility that set a new standard by flawlessly hosting events and leaving no stone un-turned for quality and service. SCS RC Speedway is a class act and a prime example what can be accomplished in this hobby. We as racers and friends owe a great gratitude and thanks to Phil for all he has done.
We all know it's not easy to do this, and do it right. The good news is he is currently searching for a new location and hopefully, there will be a nice surprise in the near future.

*With the opening of SCS in. 2017, there definitely has been an upswing in attendance for On-Road racing in Southern California reflecting a growth in the hobby that we had not seen in awhile.

*The dealers, distributors, and importers saw an increase in sales for RC car kits and accessories.

*Most importantly, we saw more youngsters with their families together racing, new blood is the future of the sport and very important to its survival and growth.

With that in mind, G.L.A.R.C.R.C. is currently working to resume RC racing operations once again in the greater Los Angeles area, we have reached out to Metro (Harbor Gateway Transit Center) as well as a few other potential locations. If all goes according to plan, we hope to be racing by February 2023

We also have another obstacle to address before any racing can occur. As a lot of you know, the trailer was broken into twice during the pandemic and we lost the majority of our support equipment, here is the attached list.

*10hp walk behind Leaf/Yard blower, est. value - $800.00

*Black and Decker Gas powered hand held leaf blower model #BXGBL225,
est. value - $100.00

*7000 watt Briggs and Stratton Elite generator, est. value - $1100.00

*Craftsman upright shop compressor model #16778, est. value - $499.00

*Dell 990 Optiplex 8gb ram desktop PC, est. value - $300.00

*APC Back-UPS 650VA UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector model #BE650G1, est. value - $83.00

*HP M110we black and white laser printer, est. value - $130.00

*Yamaha 10 channel audio mixer board model MG10XU, est. value - $219.00

*(2) Yamaha DM-105 microphones, est. value - $75.00ea.

*MyLaps RC4 Decoder + detection loop, connector box, and power supply, value - $3570.00

*Estimated costs of repairing damaged right upper rear corner/panel of trailer and replacing door locks - $1100.00

*Sun protector trailer tire covers (4), est. value - $38.99

The equipment loss and repair estimates comes to an estimated grand total of $8089.99

We also have to factor in that I have been paying the costs of trailer storage out of my own pocket since February of 2019 and I would like to be reimbursed at some point.

My vision for the future is to see G.L.A.R.C.R.C. support RC car racing not only Back at the transit center but at different, higher visibility locations around Greater Los Angeles.

*Establish a separate schedule to support electric racing, (we already have a group of racers that have committed to assisting in this endeavor)

*working with public entities and public service groups to help us secure race venues/schedules.

*Scheduling special races in conjunction with public special events. Examples include: Long Beach GP, L.A. Auto Show, RCX Hobby Expo, L.A. County Fair, L.A. Custom Car and Hot Rod show etc. Events like these get more attention and are likely to draw new blood into the hobby.

*If done right, the revenues from the racing could be used to hire a setup/takedown crew and dedicated race director which would take a lot of pressure off of the organizations core group.

*A dear friend who's legal practice specializes in Real Estate, Contracts, and Entertainment has a son very interested in getting into RC Car racing. In turn, they have volunteered their legal assistance. They will be helping us with all future contracts and legal negotiations.

* Our long term project is to establish a permanent facility through parks and Recreation with either Sepulveda Basin or Whittier Narrows recreation park. Both of which have areas dedicated for rc cars but the land needs to be developed. I have been provided with the necessary paperwork to convert G.L.A.R.C.R.C. to a non-profit status, this makes it easier for potential investors/sponsors to donate revenues and/or merchandise that can be used to establish and improve our racing program as well as the long term goals. I was also informed recently that Goodyear also has quite a bit of undeveloped land around it's airship operations in Carson CA. may be worth presenting them with a proposal.

Lastly, I hope everybody understands that may they be permanent or temporary, tracks and hobby shops need your support. Urban development is slowly taking up all the available space and its getting increasingly difficult to find places for us to play. Support those that take their precious time, energy, and resources so we can all get out on the weekends and have some fun.

We're all experienced to know that a parking lot/temporary track is a lot of work and initially, it won't be easy but I look at it this way, we have all got too much time and money invested in our toys just to let them sit on the shelf and collect dust!.

Suggestions and Ideas are always welcome please contact either myself [email protected], or Tom Wong [email protected]

We will keep you all informed as to the progress getting racing going again in Greater L.A.

Regards,

Glenn Williams

Hello Glenn, hope you are well. Do you have any updates to share? I live very close to the Sepulveda Basin and am willing to help out any way that I can to help make this happen. Is there room for an on road as well as an off road track there? Someone posted some photos of an on road track in the URC V Raceway thread a while back that appeared to be at Sepulvada Basin, do you know if that track is still there? I know that an off road track with good traction takes some work and am not suggesting that type of track be built. I think it would be a benefit to the hobby, the hobbyists in the valley, and nearby shops to have a track we can have some fun on and for some to get familiar with driving on a track. I have personally held off on purchasing anything on road, because outside of a parking lot, there is nowhere to run them close by.

Is the area that has been set aside for surface RC near the airfield or is it in a different part of the park?

Hey there, the URC track that Marvin ran was located at the Metrolink station in Northridge, not at the Sepulveda dam. The dam has a permanent RC Air field. Haven't raced at URC since Marvin bailed.

Someone posted pics of a track in the area in the URC thread. Marvin got pissed and told the guy to remove the photos. The conversation minus the pics are still in that thread. The person who posted the pics never gave the location of the track.

search under Apollo and the title of the thread is Indoor On-Road rc track in Los Angeles.
I can't post url right now because of this sites rules.

I can't get any info if it's still going. He had one track near van nuys airport and said he had one set up at Apollo field.

also this Marvin won't answer me about his track idk if it's still going. And I'm nervous about his attitude. It would be nice to have a easy going track to race at with cool people. I want to start one in the valley.

Let me know if you need anymore info or how we can get a track going.

I'm a member of Valley Flyers at Apollo Field and I don't remember there being a surface track there, just runways and a drone/helicopter area. I was there flying a few weeks back.

I know what you mean about Martin. I contacted him when I got back into RC to inquire about his race program, so that I made the right purchases. It was during Covid, so going down to the track was not an option. My plan was to purchase, practice in a parking lot, and race once everything got going again. His flyers, posts, FB page all state any questions contact me, so I did, but never heard a word. I understand that the world was sideways during this time, but if I recall he was posting from time to time, so yeah. I expect more from a Race Director, but maybe I'm expecting too much. Since I didn't hear back I spent my money on other interests, but I still had the itch to race, so I bought a Mini-Z Evo and taped out a course in my apartment.

I thought once again about investing in 1/10 on road using tax return, but my reply in this thread was not responded to and remembering my early attempt at getting back into 1/10 on road I abandoned the idea once again. Your 100% right, the valley needs a place to race, I wish I had the funds/resources to make it happen, but I don't, so for now I'll just stick to running my Mini-Z around the apartment. 1/28th's have come a long way and personally I think it would be cool if 1/28th raceways started showing up in strip malls. Slot car tracks at strip malls were quite the rage not so long ago.

Default Let's race

You know that's not a bad idea. I have been looking at the minis, but having the spot to race them is again the same issue. I race with a friend in random parking lots. I have even brought my own PVC and set up a track. It was not that great and I think I could do better if I had more time in the day light to set up. I'm really thinking of just setting up in some random large parking lots and whoever wants to come and have fun can come. No transponders or organization, just pure practice and fun would be good enough for me. I got a Tt02 but want something belt driven and am thinking of getting one soon. I'm going to start buying some pvc little by little and see what happens. Worst that can happen is that we are asked to leave.

I was going to go the PVC route. I started building a PVC track in my apartment, but 1/16 - 1/18 is a bit to big for my space and EVO's didn't have Sanwa support yet. I revisited the idea several months ago, but the cost of PVC has skyrocketed, so I settled on painters tape for barriers. I would suggest keeping things easy and just build corners and fill them with dry cement/sand (which you can get for free at the fire dept) to weigh them down, you can use chalk or some kind of twine to mark the straights. The ACE on Sepulveda has 10' (maybe longer) sections of PVC that bend. I've thought about buying a couple of pieces to make a down and dirty oval track, pretty positive you can make smaller 90's with it.

I think what you want to do is awesome and I'd join you if I had a 1/10th scale. I would suggest starting a new thread in this subsection to announce to others what you want to do or I started the thread Sepulveda Basin, post it in there since there are already people in that thread that want a track to play on. I don't think you'll get kicked off a parking lot if you are out of the way.

With liability concerns and insurance regulations these days, it always better to get permission and have it in writing (contract) if you are going to setup on anybody's property. Believe me... someone WILL ask for paperwork and most of the time there's a lengthy process and leasing fees involved.

Default Track liability

I get that fully, we use to have to get insurance back in the day at the parking lot track in lake balboa. I was a kid then. I wonder what's the difference if I'm in a parking lot without PVC driving my rc cars and PVC. I wonder if I'm bashing if they will kick me out. I hope the hobby stays alive. I love on road racing it's the best in my opinion.

The No Prep Draggers may be able to answer this question. The nearest group that I'm aware of is in Simi Valley and I'd be curious to know if the No Prep crowd gets permission from property owners, has it in writing and carries insurance.

Hey guys, some great news. We have been working for the past few months with Parks an Recreation in the city of Whittier (Whittier Narrows) to request use of one of the parking lots to race on. They are in the final stages of making a decision as I met with management recently. The final team liked the presentation and will give us a decision in the next 30 days.
I will post progress as I receive information....stay tuned!
