Default How far and long do you travel to race??

Coming back into the hobby after almost 6 years away. My kid is now almost 10 and got his first "real" RC LaTrax Teton recently. I drive it more than he does lol. But it's got me itching to get back into the race scene. With tracks few and far between here near San Francisco, the time commitment spent traveling is holding me back at the moment. The question is as posted: how long and far do you travel to race. My closest spot would be Norcal in San Jose. 50 miles and about an hour each way...

That is far, Luckly, I have several tracks near by for racing/practice

Closests are 7min 3 miles
medium are 25min 18miles

And furthest was Las Vegas road trip at 305miles 6hours

(all times/distances one way)

If my local tracks were any further than 30min drive oneway, I would simply be doing another hobby

10 minutes.

When I live in Sonoma County, we traveled 2 hours regularly to race in Antioch, Milpitas, and Sacramento. That was back in the late 80's and early 90's.

Driving a lot for work and living in SoCal has pretty much killed my love of driving and going on road trips so half hour is pretty much my limit. There are a few popular tracks that are in the 1 hour to 1.5 hour range that many of my racing friends go to, but I just can't do it. And with the pandemic on the down side traffic is getting back to the total zoo it used to be on weekends.

If I lived some place rural and it was a nice drive I'd have no problem traveling an hour to race like I used to when I was younger.

30 minutes is my limit. I have some great crawling areas within 10 minutes of the house so I rarely bother with the 30 minute drive to the track.

The closest track is about 45 minutes from me as long as my backyard track don't count. If you count my track it's 350' away from my door.

Thanks for the replies. I didnít mind the 1 hr drive a few years back but now with time at a premium and traffic picking back up, I see why finding a local bash spot is becoming so popular. Luckily I live close to a park with a lot of opportunity for off-road non-sanctioned fun. Who knows, I bet there are a few city folk like myself itching to come out and run, but the race scene (thanks to rising property and likely insurance costs) seems like it has reached its hay day years ago- likely decades ago...

I live in the deep dark South Eastern corner of Arizona - about 1/2 from the Douglas AZ / Mexico border crossing.

(5) times a year I travel all the way from here to Encino CA to put on High Speed Oval Racing on the Bicycle Velodrome (We'll be there June 4-5, 2021 for #R/C Worldrome V

This is a 600 mile drive each way - I usually break the trip up and stop in the Phoenix area for the day/night, and head to Calif. at 2:30 am from there, to arrive at the track around 9 am on practice day.

I usually head back to Phoenix after a full day of racing on a Saturday, then dinner after the races w/ a couple buddies. Encino to Phoenix/Tempe is 400 miles, I rest for a day, then make the final 200 mile trip usually on Tuesday.

A weekend race I leave home Weds afternoon, and get back home the following Tuesday afternoon.

I used to read rc car action in the 90s about that track rc thunderdome! There was this bolink pan car I could never afford (or a LTO rc10L) but always dreamed of running on that track. I would totally travel for that race. Kudos to you for putting in some miles for the hobby you love. If my kid picks up R/C the way I used to dream about it when I was his age-10 , then the distance becomes shorter and the time isn't spent alone- but becomes a "family affair." 😊

There isn't too many tracks in the bay area. I did find a small makeshift track next to genentech in south sf for playing around.
