Using a debit card or using funds in your paypal account won't give you that protection.
Also, if the deal seams TOO good to be true, it very well may be!
I have bought from newbies here, but always ask questions and feel them out before making a decision to chance them or not. I like to read their other posts and see what kind of person they are, [well as much as I can tell reading there posts!]
Has anyone else found any tips to share here on safe buying? I am all ears. Please share any thoughts you have on this matter.
Larry.
a little story about using a credit card with paypal.......bought an item on paypal(credit card was linked to the acct.) had an issue filed a dispute.

paypal offered to refund a partial of the auction even though the guy admitted the auction was not as represented,i refused they closed the dispute siding with the seller.
i filed a claim with the credit card they refunded the money almost immediately based soley on the emails and info from paypal.
paypal DID NOT like that they yanked the card from the acct. and wouldnt let me use it with the acct again i had to use my bank acct from then on.

as for tips to help avoid being scammed when i used to trade i would talk to the person on the phone before anything ever went down at least 2-3 times and get as much info as possible.
i would also ask for feedback on other sites they were at and PM people there to see how deals went.
i have no problem dealing with just about anyone but when the $ amount goes up more homework is needed ive gone as far as talking to younger members parents just to get the OK to protect MYSELF in case the deal goes sour.
you would not believe how many kids have access to thier parents paypal that the parents dont know about.

mostly as with anything in life its all about CYA....if you buy a $10 dollar part online or a 1000 dollar one do your homework fi the seller isnt willing to cough up the info then move on no matter how good a deal it is.

this goes for buyer or seller either side should have no problem giving any info at all

wow that is dirty. I think i almost got scammed. tell me what you guys think.

I was offerred a trade on an ad that i posted. The guy had pics and everything and it all look legit. The guy then tells me that the only way he'll trade is if i send first. I disagreed because it was my ad and told him we either send at the same time or he sends first. He tells me "I've been burned like that before".

I tell him why do I have to set myself up to get burned because you have been?

I then tell him the ways I will do the deal because at this point my suspiscions are raised.
1. He offers me on RCU so that there is a legal record of the transaction
2. He paypals me 150 dollars for the item, ill send it, and refund his money when i recieve his item.

No response. what do you guys think?

Default sorry to hear you got scammed.....

things like this suck.....it makes it hard on the new honest people......I have a low post count, 0 feedback, a computer and now (this weekend) a camera, but a slow (19.2 dial-up which makes sending pic. a real pain I have to go to a buddies house 8 miles away) because I live in internet death valley. Which made selling my CC motor almost imposible, I finially sold it locally. scammers blow...... people who don't post feedback don't help anything either.....just my 2 cents

Cool RE

THERE IS A EASY WAY TO FIX THIS DONT BUY FROM ANY ONE THAT

1 DOES NOT HAVE A GOOD TRADER RATING
2 OR WILL NOT GIVE THERE HOME ADDRESS
3 DOES NOT HAVE A OPEN PAY PAL ACCT

IF YOU HAVE THE ADDRESS ITS EASY TO FIND THEM FOR A FACE TO FACE
LOL

You never know the caliber of the minds these scammers have. Or the mere simplicity of their minds, and we think "oh this guy can't possibly be scamming me..."

I saw that thread all over the place, and luckily I wasn't into Nitro.

Good luck guys...I think the only safeR (not safe... this is the internet...) way to do things now is have the person we're buying from list it on ebay as "buy it now." So that way you can make a claim that paypal can review.

Default scam

I run across a new scam, I purchase a item for $225 from kd2777 and paypaled quickly, was waiting on item for about a week and notice paypal had refunded my money, I really wanted the item so i PMed and called several times with no answer, after a couple of days i finally got a repey saying "he had got the package back marked refused" I told him why would i "refuse" something I already paid for? I told him I still wanted it and can not get a response from him. I'm lucky I did get my money back but I see this as a new kind of "Payday loan" where they can not have a claim filed because of returning money. Beware.
