Default Trying RC fun without throwing in lots of money upfront

Hi guys,
I wonder if there is a way for a newbey like me to try offroad RC fun without spending thousands dollars upfront, but still have fun.
Is inexpensive electric 1/16 buggy a good way to start?
Browsing online hobby shops I found that I can get NanoDragon RTR for $100 or MiniInferno for $200. If I buy any of these, will I be able to race with others @Knox?

Lord burner - Mate you can race anything you want at knox, as long as you fit a transponder inside the car and there are more then 3 of you.

i dont think you should get a 1/18th, get a second 1/10th scale, i think you cant get a duratrax for around 200? am i right antony?

Default RTR

im a noob also, just building an associated buggy now. 1:10 scale.
That link you posted is an excelent way to start out. I have seen a few duratrax evaders down at knox, good entry level price as well.

definately only go 1:10 buggy

Lord burner - go to the hobbyman in dandenong and ask them - think they have the duratrax down there for sale, and i think should be about to get one around that price without having to pay for postage mate.

also check out http://www.knoxoffroadelectric.org/localshops.php and check out the shops

Ok, then Duratrex buggy or Stadium Truck? Is there any meaningful difference for a beginner? Or just personal preference?

if you want to do some club racing down at knox go a buggy 4 sure, the trucks are so slow and cumbersom looking around the track, the buggies get around quick and smooth.

To Simba:

That's quite a comprehensive setup is listed in your signature. Is that a buggy you're building? How much do estimate to spend on it?

Look what I found. For $300 I can get a brushless truck!
What do you think about it, guys? Is this one going to be slow and cumbersome?
The only thing worries me, that if I get it, I will probably going to wreck it. There's no point putting a P-plater into Formula 1 car.
