actually the limit is $250 Excluding postage cost....

but that $1000 limit i dont think is correct... where did u get this from? import rules are the same regardless of what carrier u use....

it is still $250 and they can charge you for anything over $250, but coz EMS and standard post ( USPS) packages go thru Australia post, they dont bother with "small" items just over the $250 mark coz too much paperwork.... and not enough resources.. but they can charge u for duty+gst if they wanted to... just depends on if the person checking is having a good day or a bad day

UPS and Fed-ex are strict on it, coz they have customs officers and i beleive they get a commision for everyone they sting

From the ATO website

Are all importations taxable?
Some goods imported into Australia will not be subject to GST. These are:

goods that would have been GST-free or input taxed if supplied within Australia – such as basic food, certain medical aids and appliances, cars for use by certain people with disabilities, and precious metals, or
goods that qualify for certain customs duty concessions.

Goods that qualify for certain customs duty concessions that are also non-taxable for the GST include the following items from Schedule 4 to the Customs Tariff Act 1995:

Items 32A and 32B - 'low-value goods' or goods on which customs duty and taxes is $50 or less and which have a customs value of
less than $1,000 (for goods imported by post), or
less than $250 (for other goods imported by sea or air)[this means courier eg FedEx, UPS].

There were others but they weren't relevant so I deleted for brevity. The website is

http://www.ato.gov.au/businesses/con...tent/13193.htm

As to the $250 including postage that could be wrong I only know it is what UPS told me last time I got stung.

The import value for a shipment through the mail, eg. Auspost, USPS is $1000AUD. The limit through courier companies, eg, UPS, FEDEX DHL... is $250AUD.

The reason UPS is charging so much is that yes the duty, (anywhere from 3% to 10% of the value of the goods plus shipping and insurance on top) and the GST 10% on top of the duty + value of the goods would be as someone said $48. The extra $60 would be for the guys at UPS doing a customs entry to clear the goods and pay the duty to customs so you can get your goods.

This was mentioned in another thread. I work for a freight forwarding company, that does import and export, I hear about this a fair bit.

Actually, the $60 is not a duty, it is a customs clearance fee.

For every shipment that Customs/Fedex/UPS (whoever) clear for you, customs get a $48 clearance fee PLUS duty and GST.

It depends on who you get also. Sometimes they dont bother, sometimes they do.

Default MUST BE DIFFERENT HERE IN WA

even before the GST came, i was already ordering rc stuff from 6 different companies using all the courier or postal service you can find. last month, i ordered $13,ooo worth of r/c stuff. here are the highlights.
bigwig (japan) US$500 plus EMS 60 tax A$60
2x bj4 (US) US$900 plus FEDEX 50 tax A105
3x gtx (phils) US$300 plus DHL 15 tax NIL
3x TT01 kits (HK) US$247 plus EMS 65 tax NIL
2x bj4 (US) US$900 plus UPS 60 tax A109
2x TC4FT (US) US$600 plus normal airparcel $37 tax A78
tamiya parts (japan) US$275 plus normal air $18 tax NIL

i do not know if the customs on your side of OZ is different but the way i understand it, if the tax component is less then A$50, customs do not worry about it but can still charge you. A$50 tax is calculated on items around the $500 not on the $250 mark. this will include postage and currency convertion of the day it was bought. so really a total of A$480 or less is safe.

yes, undervaluing items especially from HK /CHINA helps but just dont get caught. my friend is under investigation from customs and is bound to pay $15,000 in tax for undervaluing items since 2003

I wouldn't expect to be safe at $400+AUD if you are using UPS. Maybe the Sydney office is a little stricter than they are in WA but my Brushless was around $350AUD including shipping and I got an invoice for an extra $110ish can't remember exactly now and they held the goods awaiting payment. Wouldn't release them unless I paid.

The ATO website says $250 for any method other than australia post so I wouldn't take any chances based on anecdotal evidence from other people but hey if you want to risk it it's your money

I would go by what the australians customs website, not the ATO. Also as of the 12th October 2005. CMR starts, it a new system from customs for reporting imcoming goods into Oz. And the new limit will be $250AUD, before a customs entry is required. This value does not include postage costs.

Default before theres a big difference between local and OS Shops....

....but now the gap is smaller and the risk are more. most of the time its cheaper and safer to buy local....most of the people i know buy O/S only because is not available here or takes time to order but if its available here they would rather buy locally.
here are some of the stuff cheaper and not worth buying O/S
tamiya paint
tamiya spareparts
ESC( WARRANTY REASONS)
spintec battery manager
tamiya TT01 with ESC
team Losi BK2 kit
losi tyres and rims
ae rims
proline tires
proline body shell
mini-t shells
matched battery packs
futaba 3PK radio
spektrum radio system
bearings for all kits
tire glue and about 50 more items which i can
email anybody interested.

pullstarter dont you remember me? if i had a drug lab now, i would have far more stuff than that and better ones...if you stop smoking and drinking like i did, you would be able to spend at least $150 a week on RC. and when you stop goin into pubs, clubs and the casino, the budget gets even better. we should pay tax where its due and avoid undervaluing....customs are not that stupid, they know about asian countries undevaluing import items most especially from HK.
watch out.

Customs have increased the $250aud limit to $1000, before a formal customs entry is required.

I dont know were your buying your stuff O/S...

But I can get a TT01-R delivered for AU$160 (that includes AU$45 postage..!), HPI Dish rims (x4) for AU$6.40, Tamiya Uni-shaft for M-03 for AU$23.60....& i can go on.

The only reason i buy O/S is that it`s CHEAPER..you just have to do some home work and way up whether it`s worth it or not.

YES there are alot of things that you are better off buying locally like batteries and items that you require warranty on.

Thats my 2 cents worth

Cheers
