EXPLODING BATTERIES

Below is what can happen when you over charge a pack of batteries. Sounds like a shot gun going off. Fire and burning parts every where, the end of cell can blow off... this can blind you, distort your vision, mane you, burn all your hair off your head, blow off your fingers and could even kill you!

DON'T EVER CHARGE A PACK WITHOUT BEING THERE. (WATCHING THE TEMP).
DON'T OVER CHARGE. NEVER OVER 10 MV DELTA PEAK (THRESHOLD) PER CELL.
NEVER CHARGE OVER 6 AMP.
NEVER CHARGE OVER 120 DEG TEMP.
NEVER USE A METAL BATTERY HOLD DOWN AS THEY HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO SHORT OUT BATTERY PACKS.
ALWAYS WATCH THE TEMPERATURE OF BATTERY AND CHARGER.
NEVER CHARGE ON A METAL SURFACE THAT CAN SHORT OUT CELLS.
THESE BATTERY ARE POWERFUL AND BY NOT BEING CAREFUL YOU CAN AND WILL HURT YOURSELF OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE.

are they the ones you matched yourself?

Samma3l 09-15-2005 03:58 PM

how many on the above list did you do?

v0rtex 09-15-2005 04:00 PM

Ouch mike :)

Why would you use a 10mV threshold? You are asking for trouble. Maximum threshold acceptable to todays batteries is 5 mV per cell. Using 10mV will ensure that you get the results shown in the photo.

I am using 5mV per cell for GP cells,
and 3mV per cell for intellect

is it safe to go higher for intellects?

batteries

Hi all.
I found this on a site....I was looking as my son was using a buggy on the weekend..he put a pack on charge..(which I try and encourage)..using a CHEAPER charger...and walked away... not too sure how long he left them...
HE came running in and said "dad, I think theres something wrong with the batteries".
I went to the shed, noting a funny smell...burning ozone!....
The packs were bubbling away..liquid..(dangereouse, caostic, cancer, and all the bad stuff)...all over the table and the packs smoking,,,,i switched off the charger..( no, not my Competition chargers)..
He had put the leads on the wrong way..neg to positive, etc.
The charger didnt pick it up..and it cost me a pack, and for pat to learn...Scarey......
Guys...dont use a cheap charger, for the cost of your cells/ cars, etc...dont scrimp on the most IMPORTANT item in your pit box.....
The intelect cells do like the lower cut off.3 and the GP .5...this i found and so has ALL thematchers to be the best.....

Any one else got a story?
:) ..I think way TOO many racers are VERY VERY complacent when comming to charging there batteries..

Yes

WOW!! What the hell?! What brand of packs were they?

black-knight 09-15-2005 05:33 PM

so powerful the electrons could not escape fast enough... :tire:

ford_racing 09-15-2005 05:34 PM

looks like they were GP3300s

I think i saw that pic a while ago, i think it was some mong using step charging and false peak lockouts.

If you charge 6 amps and under on a good quality charger, and use the voltage threshold to determine how hot the pack is when it peaks. With Nimh always stay below 5mv, all you will achieve by having a higher cutoff is get your cells hot, and actually lose performance.

Rod - yes you can use a 5mV threshold for Intellect cells

DIMO 09-15-2005 07:12 PM

ohh

oooh thats nasty, thats why youi spend the extras and buy a charger with polarity pick up and the rest of it, temperature cut-off too...

makes me think i shuld stop charging packs of my power supply :weird:

you guys should have been at the offroad nats this year we had explosions! the we had more and then a fire!

I had heard a poping sound similar to popcorn, i said to painy dude is that a battery? so he opens his tool box and we see this thing glowing bright orange, so painy kicked the lid down then.....BOOM! the lid shoot open blow a hammer, a phone, a wallet, other tools out of the tool box, the the pack was still exploding, and it landed on my shade tent, which then caught fire.... What do we do put the fire out and possibly get blown? we endedup kicking the cells away and puting out the fire. It was scary!

We still use the shade tent, with a couple of sunroofs!

So the moral of the story is dont leave charged packs in your tool box!

If you want to come and see our sun roof come talk to us
