Graphite grease
My model asks for graphite grease on metal to metal and diff parts, does anyone know where to buy graphite grease and is all graphite grease the same? I don't want to be paying massive prices for a tiny little tub that looks all pretty. Is there an alternative to graphite grease? I have tried super cheap, repco and bunnings so far. They all say they do not stock.

Bearing shop will have it, or any good industrial supplys.
Bunnings/super cheap, are NOT good suppliers:D |
Cheers guys. Will try to find a bearing shop. I want the graphite cause that is what is recommended. If I can I will stick to what is recommended. Did not think it would be this hard to find!! And rc shops are way overpriced!!

Just get some hudy graphite grease from your Local hobby shop. If you are nitpicking about graphite grease you are into the wrong hobby IMO.
It may be expensive but I bought a little tub about 12 months ago and have used it about 5 times when I'm asked for it in a kit, and I haven't even made a dent in the tub. |

I've done that once, then found out the mark up In price!! Being in the hobby does not mean you need to pay massive mark up prices if you can do it a better way. I can afford the hudy grease but can also seek alternatives so that my money can be better spent in the hoby. Cheers |
+1 for Hudy grease. I don't see $10 that pricey for specific grease. Otherwise settle with Tamiya or Associated black grease for $3or $4 a tube, it should be with the kit honestly like all good kits. But if your stressing about mark up, then why bother going to repco and supercheap, markup up 35%. It's my back ground.

Is all graphite grease the same? If so I got quoted $9.95 for 500ml penrite. Compare that to the hudy and I think the mark up is quite high! As I said I am just looking for alternatives. If there are no alternatives then I will Continue to buy hudy.

you can make graphite grease cheaper than it will cost you to buy the pre made hobby type.
buy some joint grease or a similar thick grease from an auto shop. pic the viscocity to your preference. buy graphite powder and mix it into the grease. Bingo you have enough graphite grease to grease up an entire town, and cheaper than buying the hobby branded grease. you can use it on cvd's, outdrives and any other metal to metal areas that wear. |
Thanks Tom, I will look into that!

I have a aluminium fleck graphite teflon based grease that I have sourced and it is one of the best I have ever used....
I use it in all high stress areas and in 10th and 8th scale. Contact me for more deatails :) Cheers Fordy |

Oils is oils.Said Sol ,like the castrol add . there are many different grease's and lubricants used in RC . Some are multi-purpose, and some ,application specific . mineral, or synthetic . Youre kit instructions ask for "graphite grease" to be used for metal to metal ,and diff parts.? Depending on the type of diff's ,,ie gear,or slipper, and which part of the diff ,ie output drive bushes, gears, and bearings,or the o-ring seals, the ideal grease ,or lubricant, varies. So ,in regard to youre specific question ,(is all graphite grease the same ?) short answer ,NO. Can you make youre own ? Yes. as Tom b & Shev commented ,first you must establish the type of base to use though.Graphite is commonly found in 3 forms .powdered, stick as in pencils and electrical brushes/contacts, or for use in castings.and has outtanding properties, such as ,Low electrical resistance (high conductivety). So you dont want to get in electric motors ,or anywhere near servos or ESC's,if it contaminates a circuit board it cant be removed easily, and can play havoc with electricals. Its hard to remove because thats another of its outstanding properties, and is why its used in pencils. Pencils ,that contain graphite can be used as a dry lubricant ,and is recomended where a residual dry-film lubricant is required, and in high speed rotating shaft/pin areas where a grease or oil would fling off etc. Graphite is highly stable at high temp's ,is a form of carbon and found in abundance .its inert and non toxic. Graphite is a bit like teflon, non stick. (i use graphite,in pencil form to protect and lubricate exposed metal, parts )where other products like wd40 would attract dust etc. Is there an alternative to graphite grease ? Short answer , YES , You mentioned Moly grease in a later post.(penrite EP 3%)(australian owned ,made, and invented) Its general purpose NLGI 2 lithium grease, and depending on the application,is equal to or exedes Graphite.in its ability as a lubricant in extreme presure situations like rc gears ,CVD's and drives, and plain bearings. However, its not recomended for high speedbearings Molybdenum. Its main purpose ,when added to lubricants and greases, and assembly lube,is to leave an impervious film on the parts, and so continue to protect if the carrier (grease)breaks down,or washes out. IMO, its the best residual lube available, and has outstanding extreme pressure properties. To summarise. Oil's aint oil's Sol ! There are hundreds of lubricant products available ,both for RC ,and everything else. we can either choose products, marketed for our applications by reputable and known manufacturers ,like Hudy,Mugen Lossi,Associated,Traxus,Rb,Shumacher, and others, or figure it out ourselves. IMO Thats what this hobbie is all about, its a big learning experience. if you stick with the known ,recomended products ,make sure they suit youre application, some are multi-purpose, some specific app. Hobby shops ,Particularly in Aus,have to stay in buisness, and try to keep all the variety in stock to please everyone.Ask and they'le tell you, some stock can stay on the shelf for years, so the high markup is usualy justified. they are also a very usefull sorce of information.IMO, WE should support them as much as we can.Bunnings /supacheap etc ,are main stream, high turnover outlets, and though handy, arn't very usefull for rc information ! regards noddy2:nod::tire: . |
