I too need some help with foam tyres. I have been convinced to go to a few races at EC and to get some 40 rears. I have never raced with foam before so I have a lot of questions....

I have looked around at different brands of foam and they all have comounds with similar numbers.....Does the number 40 mean that the foam is the same for every brand or is it just an indication of the compund like on rubber tyres?

What is the difference between fronts and rears?

Are they all 26mm?

How long do foams last?

What is a reasonable price for a pair of foams?

Do they really need to be trued to be competitive or can they be used straight out of the box?

What brand and compund are good for stock at EC?

Should I bother at all with a set of 40F foams I was given for free?

Thanks to Adam Formby for convincing me to leave the hill and try EC......and also helping me set the car car up to make the 540 A main last night

Well done Roger. Where did you finish in the final?

Lots of questions. The number on the tyre is called the shore, it is an indication of the compound. The higher the number, the harder the tyre.

Fronts and rears are a different structure making rears a little softer than fronts of the same number. Thats why a lot of people are using 40r on the front.

Foams for gas cars are 30mm but if you can't get anything else, you can cut them to size on a tyre truer.

Tyres wear will depend on a lot of things. You will not get the best out of them if you don't true them down. I cut a new pair to 58mm for the Summer Nats. You will only get 2 or 3 meetings out of them at that diameter. You can leave more on but you run the risk of chunking them anyway.

You shoud pay low to mid $20 per pair here, cheaper overseas.

Don't chuck the 40f's find something to go with them.

Brands of tyres are mentioned elsewhere, Ufra are good also.

Good luck at the Creek, we'll see if you can beat the cheap Surikarn.

Thanks Jeff

I finished a lowly 7th but I am happy beacuse my average lap times were 0.5 seconds faster than in the 2nd heat in which I made the time to qualify.

And also with your surikarn, I think you should get some front aluminium gearboxes - i drove head first into the wall at the end of the straight after being axed by the purple mini in practice - the front one way is still perfect although my front hub got stripped out from the kingpin

Anyways back to the foam issue...

So am I correct in saying that the shore number means that the compound is the same for all brands.....basically all you are buying is the brand of the rim? I have been looking at fast, ellegi and speedmind.

Will people be willing to true my tyres for me on the day?

Ill be going to the creek once I can get my huge order of stuff from HK!!

also watch out if you buy "MUGEN fast" tires. these are different from just plain "fast" tires.

the mugen ones are;

- 2mm ofset
-have a double spoke six spoke rim. (instead of the 15 spoke type design)
-are a slightly smaller diameter (rim wise)
-also the rears for the mugen fast tires are all 30mm. they are designed for the mtx3

Hey Tom

Thanks for the tyre tips

Your surikarn is in bits and pieces at the moment!! I just swapped out the linkages, bearings, front hub, shaft and the gear cases and put them onto my original evo 3. Its a mix of bashed up 2.5mm carbon plates and red, blue and grey aluminium bits.....very ugly but strong.

I am going to build a new chassis with whats left of your car with all new square and tech parts from HK - this one will be my stock car for castle hill and the creek. You were definitely correct about the gear cases stopping the stripping. Also I made the drivetrain more free now by flushing all the bearings and not completely tightening the gearcase cover.....the blue rubber sealed bearings are much better for maintenance but create 2x more drag than the metal shielded ones.

Ill be coming to the creek soon....I think in about 3-4 weeks I will have the car and tyres ready so you can show me the killer EC steup!!

The ellegi and fast tyre, well most of the GRP branded tyres use a shit rim compound. I seen heaps of people buckle the rims easily. The best foams I've found are the Zac projects by Kawahara. A bit hard to get now but the next best thing is Ufra. Good rubber and strong rims. And yeah, dont buy anything with orange rims

Not that it matters now, but the best foam rubber was from Micro systems. Anyone remember them from H'ville days?

Whats with orange rims? Are you refering to a certain brand?

Or is this another one of those Sasso jokes?

Either way, thanks for the tips
