Problems with Venom ESC
I purchased a Venom ESC in December and on the third time out with it the reverse function went, I took it back to the LHS and they swapped no questions asked, thanks Fred. Anyway I have used it a few times over the holidays and one race meet and again the reverse function has disappeared. On Sunday I was casually tapping the brake while I was talking to someone and the reverse came on and then disappeared again. Other people at my club have this esc and aren't complaining, so I am trying to work out what is going on before I send an angry email to Venom.
I am using a Prince 13.5 sensored motor and a Trinity 17.5 sensored motor and they have never gone over 150F and the ESC has never gone over 100F. I don't really use reverse much but it is handy for practice and when bashing. And I know I haven't bought a $400 esc, but I do expect it to do what they say it will! ANY ideas? Nick:flaming: |
Nick
On sunday I didn't get reverse every time I tried with my Tekin, I reckon it could be a callibration issue, I'm going to callibrate my esc by not extending the throttle stick all the way forward or back that way I hope the esc reads the end points with a little bit left over Steve Just an idea |

Interesting. Nick |
Which ESC?
I recently bought 2 Venom Pro 120amp ESC's & brushless to go with them. Since I am racing I don't use the reverse function, but I *DID want the over heat protection to work. All their manuals state the over heat protection will cut off power to motor is it get over 60F & IF its a Venom motor. Well in this case it is a Venom motor & the over heat didn't kick in, can got to 109c!! Currently waiting a replacement or if I can get one. Talk about not happy jan. BTW - both systems don't cut the motor if temp goes over 60F - so don't trust it to kill the power if it gets too hot. Apart from that they seem pretty good ESC's lol ;) |

How sure are you that they make Venom, LRP and Speedpassion? I looked at their website and they certainly look similar to Venom and the programming options are the same, but won't they just send me back to Venom?

Interesting. Nick The reality is, if a company is set up to build a certain product for a certain company at a given price.....they do it. Just like years ago everything was made in Taiwan. They got too good at it and got expensive thats why everything is now made in China....they're cheaper. Next will be India, they're gearing up now to take over from China. Check hobbywing out mate COBRARACING has given you a good lead;) |

Interesting. Nick Im 100% sure hobbywing manufacturers the Esc and Faigo makes all the brushless motors for about 70% of the worlds companies . The european companies would make 10% of what they sell like rims and stuff like that in europe but everything else is made in china and relabled especially electronics under there specifications.even of the product was made in europe i can bet you $100 the materials and the molds have come from china.most companies just own brand names but not the molds or any manufacturing rights they just relable. How i know all this it's because i own a factory in china in shantou called cobrasino racing and i know all the r/c manufacturers in china and hobbywing are my friends thats why i had asked to contact them . As for manufacturing moving to india yes i agree but thats a long way off and also vietnam is a long way off as both countries dont have the infrastructure like road and highways etc i have been to those countries and have studied it in the past to move production there but they will not be ready for another 25 years min .china will be there for years to come as they have 1.4billion people to feed and i dont think they will back down to any country ,You will see in time taiwane will fall to the mercy of china its inevatable. China does have top quality sometimes better than europe and the states but its what you want to pay and many companies dont like paying to much .you get what you paid for . well anyway contact hobbywing and they will help you for sure .Just mention us cobrasino . take care friend and i hoope it all works out for you. |

[QUOTE=COBRARACING;5414048]the sensor systems are crap and dont work no matter what .just use it sensorless and use a heat sink and fan thats the best way .
When i designed our 120 amp brushless esc i designed it sensorless and the reasons why is that the motor sensor must be the same resistance(the thermisters must match and be of a low tolerence and specs of the esc and i dont make motors i can tell you this most companies who have esc and motors i can guarantee you that motor and esc are not in the same spec or made from the same factory as a match for the sensor to work properly .The only one probably is Novak were everything is matched and made under one roof.In saying all this im sure you can give the esc company a motor from another company and they can try to match them and i mean try no guarantee it would work other than the sensor part im sure all motors and esc's are all good from all companies the best way to overcome all this is for companies to forget the sensor system and build a thermistor circuit on the motor itself that you can reset with a press of a little button on the back of the motor. |
Hi Nick,
Did you set the throttle EPA to 100 before calibration? Also check the 'ABS brake setting' on the radio (I'm parroting the manual - no idea what that is). It should be disabled. |

Wow, thanks for the post - didn't know I would run in to someone who designed these ESC's :) You might be happy to know that I bought a speed passion motor & took second over all for my class in the first race meet. My main question is now - since I relied on the over heat to cut off power, and the motor, which is branded as a Venom V540 17,5t motor, got to 109c & stopped working, is there any chance of a replacement? Or just tuff luck? |
cobraracing,
I thought the temp sensor circuit only monitored the esc temp not the motors, wouldn't they need a few more wires from the esc to motor to read the transducer in the motor? Nick, wouldn't it still be under warranty? steve |

Steve it should be under warranty but I just don't want to take another thing back to RC they are going to start thinking I'm a moron who breaks stuff!
I am pretty sure the radio settings are OK, but I will check. Nick |
