Apart from the bearings that's all standard with a Trinity Duo / Fantom brushless! If you have a speedy that you can't adjust the timing through, these motors have a 10 and 20 degree advance to really get them singing!

The SP 17.5's are crap, theres been a number of us use them and the same result slow, slow, slow. It doesnt matter how you gear them youll never keep up with a Novak or LRP.

What kind of battery are you using?
If you are using lipo try with nimh. I used Novak 17.5 with IP3800 lipo this weekend but couldn't keep up with kid TT-01(SP17.5) down long stright. He was using minh battery.

I'm running the Trinity 17.5 and I find it has a bit more top end than the LRP's and runs cooler. Laptimes I am down but that's only my driving

hey H I, can you reference the performance difference for us, like when you used to run nimh were u quicker, u think nimh works better for the 17.5?

Default 17.5

Would be great to have a site and chart with specs that you can compare all brands of motors including prices.

kid TT-01 tested both nimh and lipo on Friday and he told me nimh was much faster.
He made top 3 in stock NSW on-road state title using nimh. (Top 2 used brushed/nimh combo)

I don’t know why but some reason 17.5 seems to be faster with nimh. I run 10.5 in club race and I find they are faster with lipo. It’s weird but that’s what I found out. It maybe different with off-road but SP 17.5 aren’t slow.

Default 17.5

Possible reason why 17.5 is faster with Nimh is because a lower power motor needs higher voltage to gain in top speed and draws less amps so there is a higher voltage left in the battery at the end of a race you appear to have a fast finish.

Where a 10.5 you will see a higher current (amps) draw voltage drops sooner with Nimh and you will go slightly slower towards the end of a race - so when you use a lipo (as you state) it is almost constant output voltage so it may seem faster.

My thoughts

That seems to be the current thinking of a lot of the 17.5 runners

What gear ratio were you running in 4WD stock?

i was running 76/27 which gives an FDR of 6.47 which after reading a bit more and talking to people, is a bit under geared really, but it worked at illawarra because even though its a long track, there weren't many high speed sections (one nice long straight), so the punch out of the corners was noticable when running with others, knowing a bit more now if gearing for a high speed track i'd be going up 3 or 4 teeth

I run my zx-5 @ 5.5 fdr, 76 spur 34 pinion. I will be moving to a 72 spur soon and perhaps a 35/36 pinion. I know one guy who is running his novak 17.5 @ 4.9 fdr so there is room for play.

yeah good call, from what ive read, the 2wds are looking around 4.9-5.4 fdr, and 4wd having the same tyres are being geared around the same, it varies between motors, it depends on how much cooling you've got etc, i suppose because its all pretty new, gear them a bit conservative and check temps after each run and gear up gradually
