Modified Motor Timing
 

Hi Everyone,

I have just started racing modified all the time now and im a bit lost when it comes to motor timing,Im just wondering what happens when you increase the timing or lower the timing on your motor,what does it do to the motor speed and rpm?

less timing = more torque, increased efficiency, less revs
more timing = less torque, less efficiency, more revs (harder on the motor's com, increased arcing etc)

most motors have a sweet spot, can be hard to find. I normally start with 12deg of timing on my 7/8/ or 9 turns.

Mitch, without a dyno you will never know the motor's sweetspot. However, you can play with extra advance and you'll hear the motor really sing when it winds out... Its a game of diminishing returns and the battery will dump quicker and the brushes/comm wears quicker!

I found the trickiest bit is deciding whether to change the gearing or the timing of the motor as both can be fine tuned to get the desired balance of punch and top speed. ;)

Do away with all this and buy a brushless motor/speedo ;)
