I think something must be wrong with the wiring itself. The positive terminal is connected to both the ESC and motor on basically the one lead.

All comp level speedies have only three wires, positive, negative and motor signal.

Does it still use only the two channel outputs on the receiver (ie only throttle and steer, no battery input)?

I'm not having a go at the way you wired it by the way. I'm thinking that i may have cut something that I shouldnt have.
