More work on the drivers stand this coming Sunday from about 8am.
We’ve got the following tasks to accomplish by end of day

- deck/platform installation
- bracing installation
- Stringers and treads
- handrails
so pleased to see anyone who can help out.

Another working bee is planned for this Sunday from about 8.00/8.30am. Drivers stand is priority so if anyone can lend a hand you would be very appreciated. Last planned working bee had a hiccup when Meady, our builder extraordinaire, had vehicle issues on the drive down and was stranded mid M1. Hoping for better luck this weekend.

No working bee tomorrow (Sunday 26.7.20) as looking very wet. Will let everyone know when we will try to get stand finished. Stairs and guardrails to go. Stay dry. Thommo

Default In the name of progress

Hi everyone
Are we aiming for 12 months without the St Ives track?
Its 1st of September today and my recent visit to the track shows little progress being made building the stand.
Is there anything we can do to help, what are we waiting for ?

Hi Joe,

I certainly would not have expected it to take this long. It initially took months to get a clear idea re what the council would approve. Then we had to find an Engineer to draw up and submit the plans. Even though it would be like for like replacement. Then we were told it needed to be bush fire proof. So some redesign had to be done and submitted. Then we had to await approval. Which came eventually. Then when we got started we were told we had to stop as someone else at the council now need to get involved and wanted to get the plans and work that had been started, inspected and their approved. Then we had to await another approval. Then we got go ahead we thought we were ok except then another person in council reported they had concerns about the hand rails/ safety rails of the new stand. So presently we have had to submit a further drawing/ plan and are awaiting another approval.

Note that council has contributed no funds to the project. All funds are coming from club finances so care has been required to keep all costs affordable. Some negotiations (and time) has had to be spent in discussion with council re fees that the whole process of getting approvals from council, may incur.

A club member (qualified builder) has been assisting us with drawings and plans and build details submitted to council, in his own time. He is also leading the building working bee's so when we finally go a go ahead (after about 5 months being stuffed around) we were trying to get there each fortnight but with COVID (restrictions on numbers and reasons that people could gather esp back in March & April), some weather issues, delays in approvals (3 times now I think) and an issue with the builders transport/ vehicle, this has dragged out a lot longer than I had expected.

We are still awaiting an ok from council on final design details. So no work done since step treads completed.

And then we need another working bee or 2 to try to get things completed.

Who knows what will be next re issues raised by council.

I am hopeful we will have no issues getting our COVID plan past council when we eventually have stand ready to resume racing. But we wont be able to hold a race meeting till we have stand completed and then get approval from council to hold a meeting.

Hopefully the stand and track will be open before this but I can't be sure and obviously don't yet have clear time frame for completion.

We have had a lot of enquiries re when we might get up and running. It is disappointing that the whole process has taken so long.

Hopefully some joy, soon.

Cheers Thommo

Thanks Thommo

I find it amazing the Council has no part in financially contributing to the build as its a public asset and available to the wider community.
Did they at least wave the application fees etc?

Hi Joe,

Yes the council has so far waived all the application and approval fees. This is fortunate as we were told it would be $5000 just to submit a DA at the start to be allowed to build a new stand. It was these sort of negotiations that took time to work thru as well as trying to get a clear idea re what would be allowed. Drivers stands don't have clear build standards so we have been looking at what would be the standards for suitably similar structures.

I am happy if people would like to make enquiries with council re when the stand and track might be usable again. I do not believe they have any idea that people other than club members use and appreciate the facility.

I hope to hear this week re if they have given go ahead for stand completion.

Cheers,
Thommo

Working bee this Sunday from about 8.30am. Trying to get some more progress on the drivers stand. Council happy with work done so far and ok'ed proposed work for what we hope to do to get it finished off. Things have been slow with getting ok of work done some weeks back and then finding time and good weather for the members who can assist with welding etc to finish of hand rails etc. Noting that all work is being done by members volunteering their time and skills. So thanks to all those who have contributed so much, so far.
Will see if we can also get a little tidy up of the track but note we no longer have access to the shed where all the tools were stored so maybe if we can have a few rakes, and brooms or blowers to help clean off the track it will help us to see what we need to check re condition of carpet, and jumps for further potential work.

Update: Thanks to Takis and Glen for all their effort and equipment to get the stand welded up. Thanks to Tony and Carl for the work yesterday to have the stand to the point it now is.
So the stand is pretty much now done.
The guys even put together a metal frame for an 'L' shaped table for race control.
We will be requesting a review of all this and approval by council.
Additionally we still need to wire in the 'loop' and probably some speakers and power as we are now required to bring pretty much all the equipment for a race day as we have no access to storage on the showground site.
Hopefully we can get stand and any issues identified by council sorted out over the next few weeks.
And it is looking good. Will put up some photos when the safety fencing etc is eventually removed.

Breaking News: We have a driver's stand and track is now open for use. Thanks to Glen, Michael and James for recent work to get us to this point. We have some small items to finish off and some things to sort with council before we have a formal race meet but I am hoping we might be able to hold a club race meet on 13th Dec if it all comes together. Meanwhile a few of the guys are talking about getting in some carpet running (practise) on Sunday morning so maybe break out those buggies and trucks that have been 'resting' for 12 months and get down to the track in coming days and weeks and show the council that people use this facility. The place needs some tlc but we are over a major set back.

Still expecting a few people to have shake down run tomorrow (Sunday) morning. This is just a chance to run some buggies and trucks that haven't had a run on carpet for a long time. And it will help us to work through what we need to do to the track. Members and non members are welcome to join us if you would like. The day is expected to be v hot so we plan to be there from about 8.30am and might only be there a little while.

While Sunday the 13th is not a usual St Ives race day(usually race 1st & 3rd Sundays), we are planning for a club race meet that day as big XRS event on at Hills this weekend and the 3rd Sunday will be too close to Xmas etc.
Still have to get race control stuff sorted re loop, race program etc but hopefully it will come together. Will keep you informed as week progresses but pencil it in now.

Plans are still in place to have club meet this Sunday (13th Dec) at St Ives. Weather is sounding ok at this stage. Carpet will be fine, it will be mainly the clay under the feet of marshals that we have to watch if rain continues a bit on Sat.
Have a few things to test and sort tomorrow and will send update tomorrow (Sat).
