Default 2017 Castle Hill Off Road Vintage Festival 25 & 26 Nov

Hello all Vintage RC car enthusiasts!! The Castle Hill Off Road committee is proud to announce that it will be hosting the 2017 Vintage Festival on November 25 & 26. It’s a bit later than usual due to Castle Hill hosting the State titles in September and the Nationals are being held in Maitland in October, it was just too hard to fit the festival in there without clashing with something else or school holidays.

As always, at Vintage Central, we listen to feedback, we asked what you would like to see added in the future, so this year we have added two exciting demo classes. As with all classes, a minimum of 6 entrants will be needed or the class will be merged with another. Changes / news below

2wd Stadium truck now on Sunday (4wd Day). We’ve moved the trucks to Sunday in an effort to try and even up the numbers across the days. Hopefully this won’t put many/any of you out. Truck class is starting to find its feet at the moment and the 13.5 motor limit seems to have been well accepted

Rally Demo class: As announced in the old thread, one of the suggestions we received was try out a rally class. The track will be revised for the Off Road state titles being held in September so we’ll hold off making any calls on bypassing areas etc until we know the new layout, but I’m sure we will be able to bypass any really tough spots on the track if need be. Please see the guidelines for the details of the class, thanks to James W who has taken the time to put a set of rules together It’s pretty simple, grab a Tamiya rally car from 96 or earlier, Tamiya rally block tyres, 540 or sport tuned motor, have fun (hint: there’s not much to do to convert a touring car to rally use)

Monster Truck Demo class: Steve J from Vic really liked this suggestion from a number of you so he’s put together a rule set to cover what is quite a diverse range of vehicles including 2wd & 4wd and twin motor and 4 wheel steer. It looks like it’ll be a fun class!! Again, check out the guidelines for the details of the class

We’re happy to take feedback on the demo classes, if you have queries about the rules before the event, please pm me and we’ll have a look at it and respond and post up clarifications if needed. The demo classes don’t count towards your max class limit. Demo classes are $10 each (regardless of how many normal classes you run), we will have medallions for the podium winners. If you plan on running 4 classes on a day, please ensure you are able to organise a substitute marshal for those races where you are running back to back – given the large number of races planned for Sunday, we won’t have time to chase up marshals

So the thread isn’t such a massive read, attached to the opening post is the Vintage Festival guidelines which should help you work out where your car can fit in and which motors etc can be used. If the answers aren’t in the guideline please send me a pm or ask in here and someone will know. I will update this first post with any new information as well as post in the thread

As usual I’ve also attached the eligible buggy/truck lists. Again if there’s a buggy you have and you feel it should be on the list, please get in touch and if its eligible, we’ll add it.

We always mention that if you have multiple cars eligible for a class, please feel free to run them all during the day, if you have 6 x 2wd vintage cars setup, run a different one each race! And if you have too many vintage cars to run, put a sport tuned motor in one and run it in classic

Entry fees will be $20 for the 1st class, $15 for the second and $10 per additional class after that, you can enter up to 3 classes per day. If you bring your kids (16 and under), they're just $10 per class. Demo classes are $10 each (regardless of how many normal classes you run)
Handout 540s are available for $17 per motor. Please order your motors when you enter the event. Thanks to Ari at Northern Beaches Hobby Centre and Hobby Express for arranging the supply

The BBQ will be running for lunch as per usual and cold drinks will be available all day

Drivers meeting 730am

******Racing will START at 8am SHARP on BOTH days******

The events to be held on Saturday are:
• 2wd Vintage Stock
• 2wd Open (Vintage or Classic)
• 2wd Classic
• 2wd Purist Stock
• Plastic fantastic
• Rally Demo Class

The events to be held on Sunday are:
• 4wd Stock Vintage
• 4wd Open (Vintage or Classic)
• 4wd Classic
• 4wd Misfits
• Pipe Frame
• 2wd Stadium Truck
• Hotshot
• Monster Truck Demo Class

We will be having approximately 4 minutes between each race – as there are lots of us running multiple classes

MVP - On Sunday afternoon we will present the trophy for MVP (Most Vintage Pride). This will be an entirely subjective award which will come down to biggest effort for the weekend so it will encompass thing such as (but not limited to) display vehicles/arrangement, attire, attitude, competing in the spirit of the event, tallest stories about the good old days, rarity of vehicles raced etc. Being No.1 on the track won't make you the MVP. Being No.1 in the pits will! Wiggy took it out in 2013, Stephen James in 2014, Pete Wagner in 2015, Dean (Captain Splatt) in 2016, who will be added to this stellar list in 2017?

The festival has been growing with each year. We love seeing the variety of cars being raced and put on display. If you’ve never entered a festival before, give it a go!! There’s a friendly atmosphere and everyone is happy for others to check out their cars and have a chat and it isn’t a race for sheep stations on the track with plenty of fun classes in the mix allowing you to run the beginner based models such as the Frog or Hotshot against similar style cars. If you have any questions, please feel free to post here or send me a pm, we’re only too happy to help and offer advice/assistance

Cheers and we look forward to seeing you all there!!

Mikey and the Castle Hill Off Road Committee

Clint, WLR's talent scouts will be in attendance, looking for your 2018 enduro replacement. If you play your cards right and perform well enough, your replacement could be you 😉

Default TWIN MOTOR MONSTER TRUCKS

Hi guys.

In drafting up the monster truck rules, I proposed the Tamiya Sports Tuned motors for the twin motor trucks for a few reasons (they 'should' help achieve speed parity with the 2wds, most guys have a couple lying around, they're pretty cheap and widely available, and they won't fry the cheap twin motor ESCs).

One thing I overlooked is that they have fixed advanced timing, and run faster forwards than in reverse. Therefore the speed gains over a silver can will be minimal if anything.

We're investigating alternatives at this point and will announce our findings soon. Of course the handout 540s will be permitted also, should you not care about top end.

Apologies for this oversight.

Cheers

Steve

Default CLOD MOTORS

Sorry for the late reply re: the Wild Willy 2. As much as we'd like to be inclusive the Wild Willy isn't really a monster truck and the WW2, as you have noted, isn't vintage either, so it's not eligible sadly.

Regarding the allowed motors for twin motor trucks, the vintage tribal council have sacrificed 3 goats to the vintage gods in return for a ruling.

Basically were looking at the following motors being allowed for Clodbusters and other eligible twin motor trucks:

- handout 540j motors
- kit 540 motors
- Johnson 4 slot motors
- Tamiya Sportstuned motors
- Traxxas Titan 550 21t motors
- Traxxas Stinger 20t motors

A few words of warning though;

- the Titan motors are 550 size and supposedly fit (according to the guys on Clodtalk) however do your own research. I'll likely buy a pair of these to test and will confirm yes or no once I'm able. The Titan motors can also be purchased in pairs (one normal rotation and one reverse - I'd recommend this as I believe they have some fixed advanced timing)
- the Sportstuned motors (and possibly the Johnson 4 slots) have sone advanced timing, and therefore run slower in reverse. Opinions are mixed whether this will be significant.
- ESCs obviously have stated motor limits. There are many on the market, and it's up to yourselves how far you're willing to push the limitations of the ESC.

All in all, as this class is being run for the first time it's yet to be seen if the Clods will keep up, or outperform, the 2wd trucks. We're looking at introducing some obstacles which should hopefully favour the Clods to even things up overall. None of us have been able test the 2wd trucks against the 4wd trucks in race conditions, so it will unfold over the race day. Adjustments to the class rules will be made, if necessary, for following years assuming the class is successful numbers-wise.

Thanks and any suggestions are welcomed.

Cheers,

Steve

As I am every year I am so keen for this event. But it seems that I won't be able to attend this year, even with so much notice
Even had a new car purchased and prepared already for it

if anyone is looking to get their vintage cars out for a run, we're looking to run a vintage class at the Castle Hill club day on 04/06/17.

2wd/4wd/540/sport tuned all in one class, just for a bit of fun. hang onto your sheep stations for the festival

Cheers

Also just quickly, I've had a bit of feedback about the mod class, a suggestion was made that could we run the same motor format in mod as we do in stadium trucks, ie down to 13.5t brushless blinky or down to 19t brushed

I'm open to something like that but like i say, its your event and your class, i know theres some like Thomas who like to bolt in a 4.5 or something similar, so i dont want to thwart that, but perhaps a middle ground like this allows more people to run the class so people have somewhere a bit faster to run than the 540 classes

I'm happy to hear any feedback, perhaps we could trial it as a "gentlemans agreement" this year with a view to bringing it in next year

Cheers

Hi Mikey,

I don't mind the idea of a motor limit, but my biggest hinderance, 2wd in particular is exclusion of Classic cars. If it was open to both vintage and classic it would open it up a little more.

Cheers

I think i'll be stepping back up to whatever the 'mod' class is this year. will have 2 fresh re-re's that can take it. the fragile TRX-1 is likely to retire to the shelf

With the current dates, I know Paul is unfortunately already OUT for this years festival, which he is totally devo about
