If you're coming to paddocks from the east, get off on cotton lane and go north. McDowell won't work as citrus is closed.*Might need to go to perryville rd, then to rooseveLt

June 16 was round 3 of the Kenny Brosh racing league, Nitro series. Unlike every other smooth track in the state, round 3 was hosted by Mike Paddock with his infamous Super Blow Out dirt. 10 years ago when there was no other 8th scale track, Mike’s Place was the only place to get some 1/8 scale on, so I always love to get back there and run nitro. Thank you to Mike, Ron Wood, Dominick Caruso, and Perry, for all your hard work to make a perfect race day go off without a hitch!

Practice started at 2 PM when temperatures were still climbing above 105 degrees and even though the temps were up the place was packed from the get-go. Racing started at 5:30 and about an hour and a half into the program wheeler told me that a Haboob was on the way and sure enough it did. Although it looked ominous, by the time it got to us it wasn’t anything like the ones we had last summer and so racing continued with only a 3 min. break.

With this series being 5 rounds in length and 2 already completed, round 3 would really show who the front runners were, moving to the later stages of the season. As always, paddocks Track would break down and make for the toughest track conditions! Exactly what we love about the place! Here’s how it all went down.

*
Novice sponsored by Quicks R/C Hobby Shop:* At Canyon Vista for round 1, Garrett Wright was pretty impressive in his debut, taking the TQ and then 2nd place in the main.* He repeated the 2nd place effort at Fear Farm for round 2 and was looking for his first win of the series, at Paddocks..* With a strong qualifying effort in round 1 being so important at Paddock's track, Buddy Lanham through down a very strong qualifying run that would hold up to be the TQ for the day.* First timers for the season Rich Brown and Brian Wibel qualified in the top 5!*
*
A main:* In the Novice A main, Lanham slid early and Garrett went forward to the lead.* Running the Mugen Truggy was definitely an advantage at this rough track but it also takes a good game plan to run at the front.* Garrett led out the first half of the race but then Brian Wibel, who was running in 2nd, took down the top spot and would lead almost the rest of the main.* Moving into the final laps Wibel and Wright were separated by only a second but a rough last lap for Brian gave the win to Garrett.* Garrett moves on from round 3 as a clear favorite to take the title and Brian made a major statement about his quickness, especially considering he was running a buggy!* This was the first run for Wibel in the series so I'm already excited to see what happens on a smooth track like Canyon Vista.* Another great story from this main was 3rd place on the podium, Dennis Porath!* Dennis has been working really hard to get a medal and it finally paid off!* He started 7th but quickly moved to the top 3 and just held off a hard charging Lanham.* I could tell even during the race how much a podium would mean to him and after the race he confirmed. lol
*
Novice Point Standings:
*With Garrett getting his 2nd win of the series and 3rd straight podium, he’s you leader in the class over Dennis and them Mark Hacker. Brian Hankla and Mario Vasquez are tied for 4th right now with two rounds to go. Mario has a win from Round 1, and only 2 of three rounds completed so far, so anything can and will change!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Buggy, sponsored by Team Terribles:* Entering round 3, the top 5 in points were...
*
Eric Kirts
Scott Farnsworth
Cody Rothe
CJ Bourke
Clay Fabrizius
*
Farnsworth and Bourke were not in attendance Saturday, setting the stage for big moves for those just outside the top 5.* In honor of the U.S. Open, we could even call it, "Moving Day".* lol
*
C main:* We took 7 to each main and bumped 2 from the lower mains and with mechanical issues in both qualifiers, many of these C main drivers were hoping for a 2nd chance to the final.* From the tone in the C main, Clay Fabrizius (Remember he was in a top 5 in points), led throughout.* He took the win by 10 seconds on Brandon Sullivan but both would move on the the B main.* Unfortunately Tim Lime had problems in warmup and was unable to compete for a transfer.* It was great seeing Matt Sciarrotta out there Saturday but without running nitro in a few months, it was a tough day for him.
*
Open Buggy B main:* Looking through the B main field, you see a few guys who don't belong and also a few that maybe showed patience in the qualifiers to qualify so well.* BQ was Albert Andrin and if that name sounds familliar it's because he raced back when the Nitro Pit was killing it!* Albert and his buddy Sean Dickenson raced pretty regularly and were just kids back then.* Now fast foward 4 years to about 2 months ago, when they walked into the booth at Fear Farm; I was shocked to see them after such a long time.* They've been concentrating on school but were now looking at making a leap back into racing.* I distinctly remember them thinking it would be some time before they got things together but within a month they secured some funding from Sean's Dad's business and had matching RC 8.2's....* Saturday was their 2nd time back racing and the first KBRL but as you will see, it didn't take either very long at all, to jump back into their A game..
*
Like I said, Albert started out front in the B main and although he didn't lead throughout, he did run 1st or 2nd, always in a transfer position.* Albert took the win and the 1st transfer position but it was the 2nd one that everyone was fighting over.* One of the most impressive moves of Round 3 was From Mark Forbes.* Mark drove the best I've seen from him and qualified 9th overall, just outside the A Main.* In the B, Mark had a horrible first lap and came around nearly dead last but he quickly started moving forward and even led the race with just a couple minutes to go!* It was a battle down the stretch between Forbes and Brandon Hacker, who had just experienced the same pressure at Fear Farm, three weeks ago.* In the last 4 or 5 laps, Brandon clicked off 37 and 38 second laps where Mark had 3 laps in the 40's including one 48.* That was the difference in this one as Brandon Hacker would bump to the A main for the 2nd straight round.* Several drivers should feel very good about their performances, as Forbes and Passmore had their best runs yet!* Joe Bauer had a good battle with Aguilerra but came up just 2 seconds back.* Thanks again Joe for making the trip down from Prescott!* Aways great having you!* Darrin Hunt with BCG industries gets the hard luck award :-(
*
A main:* With the transfers out of the way, we set in on the Final with a fast group of guys, from top to bottom.* Here was your qualifying order...

*
The story of this main was two fold:* 1st, who made the podium and 2nd, Who wasn't!
*
For the 2nd straight round, there were major players for this championship who finished off the track or back in the pack...
*
Eric Kirts :* Points leader coming into Paddocks and running a brand new XB9!* Eric set TQ with a really fast run, fast enough to be 8 seconds quicker than 2nd place and quick enough to be respectable in the Pro class!* After a poor start, Eric moved all the way to 2nd and was the quickest guy on the track but then a flame out sent him back* to the rears and he would finish 6th.
*
Aaron Lewis:* Qualified 2nd with his SH buggy.* This thing was brand new Saturday with the first laps laid down about 2PM.* Aaron held down 2nd on the first lap but then had a mechanical issue that sidelined him for about two minutes.* He was off the track again at the 18 minute mark and would finish 7th.
*
Travis Saunders (AKA Captain Cheesecake):* Travis Qualified 3rd in his Losi and had a strong run going when he fell off the track at the 13 minute mark.* Don't ask why ;-)** Travis ran in the top 3 up to that point, leading about half that time.* He really needed a a big point day here but that was not to be.* He finished 8th...
*
Cody Rothe:* Cody is a former ACS Champion in open buggy and when he won the class at Canyon Vista, I felt like he was the favorite for the series.* Cody showed up late for this round and with this type of track, that didn't help his qualifying efforts.* He still made the main through qualifying but you almost felt like a lower main and track time would have been beneficial for him.* Qualifying at the back of the pack, Cody couldn't break free and would fall off the track before really feeling comfortable on the drivers stand.* He finished 9th..
*
Now for the rest of the group:** Winner of the B main, Albert Andrin make a huge move right away, moving all the way to the top spot by the 6 lap mark!* He was still running strong when he ran out of fuel and dropped all the way to 7th.* Doing his best to make time on this clapped out track, he moved back to 4th; a very strong return to the R/C scene!* Joe Pit qualified strong and started top 5 and that's exactly where he finished.*
*
The Top 3:* The three we haven't mentioned yet... Dickenson, Hames, and Hacker,* would be the ones taking hardware away from round 3!* Sean started 6th and rode there for a few laps while everyone got sorted out.* Once he had more room to work, he moved forward to 2nd and when buddy Albert ran out of fuel, Sean took the lead and never relinquished it!**Congratulations Sean*and Albert and I'll watching closely to see if they can repeat at Canyon Vista.* 2nd place for the day went to someone who has had his fair share of bad luck lately, so it was great to see "Erik Hames" have his day in the sun!* Erik qualified 4th and was rarely outside of the top three through this one.* When Saunders left the track early, Hames moved into the top 3 and Hacker moved to 2nd.* For the remaining 7 minutes those two battled with Hames finally snatching 2nd with 4 laps to go and hanging on for a solid 97 points for the day!* And how about Brandon Hacker?!!......****** He came out of nowhere at Fear Farm, bumping to the A and then finishing 3rd!* Make it two in a row now for Brandon!!* Great job guys, great show!
*
Points coming out of Round 3....
*Eric Kirts has been the most consistent through the first three rounds and That consistency leaves him with a 12 point advantage on Cody Rothe with Joe Pitt and Brandon hacker tied for 3rd place. Travis, Jariel, and Eric Hames are all within striking distance of a top 3. Remember, out of the 5 rounds you take your best four!
*
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Electric 1/8 sponsored by anti-hangover.com:* Up to this point it has been Aaron Brown, all day-every day, as he has two tq's and 2 wins in the first two rounds of the series..* Saturday was a bit different but the same in the end.* TQ for round three was Rhino with a round 1 time that was 4 seconds quicker than Aaron.* There were several regulars not attending round 3 including 2nd, 3rd, and 5th, in points, so things would really change after this A main.
*
A main:* Out of the gate Lenz kept the lead but only a couple laps in, Aaron Brown took the top spot.* Brown took the convincing win, making it three straight wins and 302 of 303 possible points earned!* Oh, and I saw the buggy he's building and it's........NITRO!** Dominick Caruso had a great run and was even in 2nd for a time before eventually giving it back to Lenz.* They would finish just 4 seconds apart after 14 minutes.* Sullivan, Hopkins, and Lanham rounded out the field and with major players gone from competition, the point standings would see a big swing inside the top 5.
*
Points after round 3:
* after Aaron’s 3rd straight win he has a commanding lead with 305 points whereas second-place has 277. Ted Hopkins is currently 2nd with Buddy Lanham just 2 points back, helped by his strong qualifying effort Saturday. Tom Lenz and Brandon Sullivan only have 2 runs in so if they make the final 2 rounds they’ll be heading north in the standings.
*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*
Pro Buggy, sponsored by Big D's RC's:** I should have known last Thursday that the Pro buggy class was in trouble, when Ernest Madrazo left the drivers stand after round 1 of qualifying at Fear Farm saying, "Paddock's setup doesn't work here".* Ernest has been dialing in the new Xray XB9 and by Saturday's results, I would say he's getting it together.* In a day where logically round 1 should be faster than round 2, Ernest blew up with a 10 lap run, the only one of the day in Pro Buggy!* Here was the starting grid with Fischer* at the back of the pack due to showing up during his 2nd qualifier. lol
*

10.** Billy Fischer****************** 8*** 5:20.336** 2*** 4*
*
Pro A Main:
It wasn't like Ernest had one good qualifier and then blew out in the main, he actually led the first 15 laps before giving up the lead to Casey Peck in his Losi.* Chris Wheeler (Losi) got on track and took over to stay, leading the last 10 laps or so, moving Peck to 2nd and Madrazo rounding out the podium.* Tom Stober made his maiden voyage with his new Kyosho, qualifying 5th and ending up 4th for the day!* One thing I remember from this main was hearing Tellefson announced in 3rd or 4th, a good 6 minutes into the race.* Good job!
*
Congratulations to Wheeler for the win and to Casey and Ernest for rounding out the podium.* Ernest, in my book, was*by far the biggest success story of the day!*
*
Points leaving Paddock's:
Even though Billy had other plans and was a late arrival Saturday, he still leaves Paddock’s with the points lead by the slimmest of margins over Chris Wheeler. Wheeler is just one point back and fellow teammate Casey pack is another 3 behind. Medrazo and Stober gained points on 4th place and Singletary is definitely in the mix as well. The top 3 have a huge advantage on the rest of us but I think it’s a battle for bragging rights that will go down to the wire in Pro buggy.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1/8 Truggy sponsored by Terriblesrc.com:
Entering the day, Travis Saunders had the lead in points, as Singletary had problems and was off the track early at fear farm. Ivan Aguilera Tom Lenz and James Allara rounded out the top 5.

After 2 rounds of qualifying the top 7 went to the a Main. Here they are...

Top Qualifiers for 1-8 Open Truck 06/16/2012 8:25:33 PM

Qual# Name Laps Race Time Rnd Pos Behind FastLap
----- ---------------------------- ---- --------- --- --- ------ -------
1. Chris wheeler 10 5:12.544 1 1
2. Greg Singletary 10 5:32.163 1 1 19.619
3. Vareck Wright 9 5:08.265 2 1
4. Erik Hames 9 5:08.678 1 2 0.413
5. Ted Hopkins 9 5:10.084 1 1 1.819
6. Clay Fabrizius 9 5:10.357 2 2 2.092
7. Tom Lenz 9 5:10.623 2 2 2.358

take a 2nd look at that list and notice that 2 drivers in the top 5 are not in it, including the point leader Travis Saunders. Before we get to the a Main let’s go back and see who got the transfers.

C Main: Sabrina kilday was CQ and she maintained the top spot throughout the main. Likewise, Tony Veno Sr. Ran 2nd throughout and so both transferred into the B Main.

B Main: the track and the competition was so tough through qualifying that even the points leader wasn’t assured a spot in the A Main. Saunders would start from the front in the 12 min. b main and throughout the 12 min. never relinquish the lead. He won by a decent margin and would prepare for the Final to come, relieved I’m sure to at least be running the show. The battle for the 2nd transfer position would be much more interesting as Greg Payne, Ray wood, and Ivan Aguilera all held it at one time or another. It was Ivan’s to lose at the halfway point but a flameout sent him to the back of the pack, this left wood and payne to battle it out for the final spot in the a. As the clock hit the 1 min. mark it was literally neck and neck between the two but a couple laps in the 4o second range would give Greg the position to stay, sending him to the A, with the other 8 drivers....

A Main:
Through 2 rounds and 6 total qualifiers only twice did someone go 10 laps in open truck. Chris Wheeler was TQ going 10 in 5’12 and Greg Singletary doing it in 5’32. at the sound of the tone Wheeler headed off with the lead but before things really got going he flamed out giving the lead to Singletary. Even when pressured early, Singletary didn’t falter and lead through the 20 min. mark taking the win by 20 seconds over rhino making it a 1-2 Kyosho finish. 3rd place went to Travis Saunders (TLR) who started at the back of the pack needing a bump up to just make the main. Points day salvaged! Wheeler had multiple issues in the main but he still finished 4th and Eric Hames completed a successful day with another top 5. With the rough blown out track and a 20 min. main only 2 drivers didn’t make the duration. Good preparation everyone!

Points looking forward to Canyon Vista:
When the dust settled it was Singletary moving out front once again in points with Saunders now 2 points behind. Tom Lenz made a huge move forward with his second-place finish and Ted Hopkins as well as Eric Haines moved up with their best finishes of the series yet. Watch out moving forward, as Chris Wheeler only has 2 rounds in but they are for 97 and 94 points respectively.

a few days removed from this race and it’s the same old thing; a fair number of racers asking, ” when are we going back to Paddock’s”? It’s so not a typical but it’s so awesome. If you haven’t experienced it you should!

Thanks everyone for coming out and thanks again to Mike and his crew for a great day of racing! No matter how good or bad I did, any race where Veno earns a bump up is one for the memory book!! Hope you felt the same as you possibly watched the sun come up Sunday Morning. I did; I couldn’t fall Asleep; Go Figure.

Kenny
