I have been watching the electric 1/8th scene for quite a while, but never dived into it, as I have been somewhat of a 1/10th scale fan. But here is a question about the electric 1/8th racing scene around northern IL.
For the 1/10th racers that plan to visit Outback this year, would it be a nuisance to marshall and to co-exist with 1/8th scale electric buggies, even truggies? Would this be too much class dilution? Would it be a good opportunity to learn about these interesting racing platforms.
For the electric 1/8th racers, would you want to race at the Outback raceway this year? If so, as I build this year's track, are there any special features I should keep in mind? For example, are 10-foot lane widths adequate? Can you deal with the size of my layout (see post #4 of Outback RC 2009).
Any other thoughts?

Bob I suggest you invite any and all of the electric 1/8th scale racers to come and check out your venue before the outdoor season starts here in the Chicago area.
Throw a chilly hot dog roast, get the lap timer up and running and have people throw their buggies down.
They'll tell you exactly what would be best and where on your track. Use that info and tailor your plans for the upcoming season from what you hear.
Your place could become an 1/8th scale electric dream.
I don't have any problems with electric 1/8th scale. I have thought about getting one myself but the cost keeps me away. I would be ok with marshalling them- I hope they don't drive like the nitro guys!

I would love another track to race at with 1/8. Not sure how far Marengo is from Chicago, but I would probably make the trek. Basically, electric 1/8 is the same as nitro 1/8 as far as track requirements are concerned in regards to size.
I still have some time to work with before I claim my track space for the year, and let my farmer use the rest. I am all for the idea of building suitably for 1/8th electrics. Actually, a fellow named Nick (lots of Nicks) brought a 1/8th E in early 2008 and I ran it around my track with 8-foot lanes and thought it was not too bad. Do you think 10-foot lanes would suffice. Maybe take a look at the layout plan and see if it has any flaws that need to be straightened out early on.
Marengo is closer to Chicago than Belvidere by several miles. You would take 90 West and exit on the Marengo/Hampshire exit, then take Hwy 20 for a good ways, like 15-20 minutes further west. Then you're there. You can show up any day you want to check it out. Map is on the website -- www.outbackrc.com

Well, the weed and beer stuff probably should not show up. Ladies can race, though, and if they are too loose, they can try some step pins.
The layout that you see in place right now is 75% of the square footage of LH indoor, which is 65x125 = 8125 sf, while mine is sitting at 6300 sf.
It is about 90 by 90 square , but with a diagonal cut through one corner that subtracts a 60 by 60 foot triangle. It could be any size up to about 300 by 1,000 feet, but there are practicle limits. If the racers decide we want to go bigger or a different sape, that can always be worked out. I would like to get my watering down to a science (such as seeing how sawdust helps water retention) before I go too big -- the dirt drains well and will dry out sort of quick, as is.
[edit: the picture and my numbers don't match. I have been revising the picture to make it a bit bigger. The picture shows about a 5,600 sf track, which is 70% of LH indoor.]

Looks good to me. That should be big enough for 1/8. I raced at a 1/10 track in MI that was a little smaller than LH indoors and it worked well with the e-1/8s. They had a whole heat of us (I believe 10 on the track), so it can be done. The track didn't feel too crowded either.
The main thing is that there is room to stretch the legs. They are quite fast.
I am looking at making that whole back stretch, from lower left to upper right about a 120-foot sweeper straight and might make that a bit more like 12 feet wide.

Do you leave off the mechanical brakes, and does that hurt the brake-bias effects much?
Can't wait to see it.
Are there any J-82s out there?
