Tamiya re-releases

Tamiya re-releases
Has anyone built any of the Tamiya re-release? Always loved the original Tamiyas but I'm worried that once built I'll be really disappointed with the performance. Any thoughts or opinions?

I've built a couple of the re-releases, the Frog, Hornet, Grasshopper, Rough Rider, Super Champ, and they're fun to drive but compared to today's cars, the performance definitely lags. But keep in mind that the design of some of these cars dates back over 35 years, so they were great for what we had at the time. But I also remember the first time I saw an Associated RC10 at the local track and there I was with my Frog, it definitely made me look like a novice as companies like Associated took the racing aspect of the hobby very seriously. Tamiya kept it at a lower level and more affordable for kids that just wanted to have fun.

I built a re-release Clod Buster. If you take your expectations back to the 80's when RC's were all about fun and looks and less about performance you will be happy. If you buy one expecting the durability and performance to be comparable to anything modern you will be sorely disappointed.
I run my Clod all stock and I love it.
I think everybody should build and drive a Tamiya re-release. They're so fun.
If you want a re-release with more performance capability there is the Associated RC10 World's kit.

I'm building my re-re Hotshot now and am thoroughly enjoying it. Like others have said, the sole purpose is to remember my first HS 2 back in the 80s. The only mods in terms of performance I am doing is to put the GT motor in as opposed to the stock silvercan.

Thanks for all the feed back. My brother had a Hot Shot and my best friend had a CB. That truck looks awesome!! I'm torn about having a "shelf queen" and something with a bit of performance. The Team Associated might be an avenue for me.

Actually I would love if Tamiya re-released the Big Wig. Loved that car

OMG. This might be a dream come true. I remember saving up to buy one, only to have the last one sold on me the day before. I was devestated lol. I left the hobby for a few years because of it.

The Clod Buster is not a shelf queen. It's a tough truck in stock form and to this day it's a popular truck. People still use Clod Buster axles as the basis for racing monster trucks. It's crazy what you can do with a Clod Buster.
With that being said, if you want a basher you might be better off looking elsewhere. You have to decide what type of RC you want, 2WD or 4WD, and decide where you're going to run it.
Associated makes great vehicles.
