DFW R/C Car Racing Just-for-Fun in Carrollton, TX

It was an absolute BLAST to see all 14 racers show up to DMS and race on Saturday. We organized everybody into 4 classes: (1) 10th scale touring cars (2) 10th scale short course trucks, (3) 10th scale drift cars and (4) 8th scale GT cars.
Here's a pic of the track layout from Saturday.
We plan to open the track up even wider for next weekend so that the 8th scale cars and the short course trucks will have more room.

For those looking to run GT8 8ight, here is my basic setup for springs and tires:
Sweep 50 shore treaded all around
RC4Less Yellow - front (22 lbs)
RC4Less Silver - rear (14 lbs)
Here's more or less where I ended up for a base setup:
Front Toe out: +0.5 or 0 degrees
Rear Toe in: -2.5
Ride height: front 9mm – rear 10mm (8mm – 9mm if track is super smooth)
Front upper pin – lower shock tower position
Rear inner upper link – lower shock tower
Springs: Rc4less yellow. Stiffest in front.
Shock oil: 80W
Droop – front 1mm, rear 1 to 2mm
Camber – front -1.5, rear -2.5 (change angles depending on tire wear patterns)
Diff oils:
Small tight tracks: Front - 30K to 50K & rear 10K
Tires: sweep treaded 50 all around.
I need to double check the oil as I think I had lighter than that in there. Started at 16/45 but I dropped to a 13t to help with temps. Plan on testing some more sway bars coming up.
I know David and Juan were running slicks that seemed to hook up pretty well. Heinz did just fine with his bald SCT tires it looked like as well!

A group of DMS members have restored a vacuum-forming machine. The 3D Printer shop at DMS has a 3D scanner. So now there are plans to scan a car model, scale it up in the computer, and make a scale vacuum form to make a R/C car body. Inspiration came from the video below...

Blue sky and sunshine greeted us this last Saturday afternoon along with our first expansion! Robert and David threw down their F1 cars and proved that, yes they could make it around the track and live to tell the tale. The SCT and Drifters were once again out in force. We had plenty of tight wheel to wheel action in GT8 and "4 door family saloon style" class.
A couple quick observations:
1. Slicks work well! F1,sedan, and GT8 got some good testing in this weekend and the
verdict is bring out your slicks! Treaded tires work well as conditions change (warmer track with the sun out, cooling slightly as the sun retreats behind the building).
2. Bring a chair! A small foot stool would be nice as well as a table to work on.
3. Bring spares, so far no one has broken (seriously, not sure how that's happened!) but while you might not need it, someone else might.
Can't wait till next weekend!

Thanks for the great write up Joe.
Here is another good review of last Saturday's races:
Here is another good review of last Saturday's races:
Had a great time saturday night at makerspace RC raceplex! You guys have a great thing going and I'm sure it will grow and get even better. This is grassroots rc racing at its finest! There is just something about the fresh air, racing on a temporary parking lot surface, pitting with a folding table and chair and running your charger off your car battery. Was great to see all the familiar faces again and get some wheel time in.
F1 worked incredibly well with a couple minor changes from the carpet setup. Main difference is a little more ride height, around 5 mm. softer center shock spring and different front tires. On carpet with an F104 it was always pit shimizu hard rear and soft front tires but here you dont need so much steering. All the car needed was tamiya F104 standard kit front tires and no change to the rear tires. The car was really fun to drive and provided nice controlled power slides in the sweeper. Plus you get that great sounding howl out of the tires!
See everybody next weekend. I should have a second F1 car with me along with a driver to pilot it!
