just picked up a fantom apex version 17.5 motor from a guy on here. excited to see how it performs compared to the viper 17.5 I have been running. I am running 2wd stock buggy. Mid motor team c tc02c buggy on carpet track. was running the viper geared at 30/80. Any idea on recomended starting point for gearing and timing with this motor. thanks and look forward to trying out this product. been happy with the viper but wanted to try something different.

There are a number of problems with this "Tech Talk".

In order to be a ROAR spec motor, it must be sensored, not sensorless.

Quote:
REQUIRES: Sensorless ESC

COMMENTS: This sensorless design motor works with most racing speed controls
except Novak.

Since this motor is sensored, and approved by ROAR for spec racing, there is no reason that Novak's (sensored-only) escs should not work.

Ordered one will let you know.
Thanks For Your help

Mine can be a little hard to turn at times also, butbit doesn't give meca problem.

As far as timing. I run my 17.5 in blinky buggy in my b4.1. I have my endbell timing almost maxed out. About 2 clicks away from max. I run 72/35 for a FDR of 5.3. I come off the track about 130-145 deg.

However, after assembling the motor, I found if I tighten the motors main screws too tight (not the timing screws), then I can't easily change the timing. I had to back off a little on how tight the main screws are and even then, the timing is difficult to change. I have to use a allen driver in one of the timing screws to rotate it.

Is it supposed to be that way?

I think I got a lemon as far as being able to change the timing. Something doesn't fit just right.

On a positive note, the motor still ran after I put it together.

Now I need to find out what timing to use for the motor and ESC.

I was using 0 timing on the motor and I think I'm around 50% timing in the ESC (I have to check that). All I know is I had to go to 5.0 FDR just to keep up with everyone going down the straigt away. Temps never got over 120F.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for everyone's help

So, is it safe to keep the boost at 55%, and then start adding timing on the motor until the temp gets too high. Or, should I start all over with gearing. It's pretty close now, I could just go up two more teeth. Which is better for overall acceleration and top end.

Yes, the Fantom motors are just D3/ReVtech motors with a different sticker. All of the parts are interchangeable.

I would start with no boost on your ESC and use the motor timing and gearing to get as close as you can. My revtech didn't like boost from the speedo, got too hot too quick. If you can't get what you want with the motor timing and gearing then just add a small amount of boost at a time..

Just my .02$. though

anyone using 17.5 in 2wd short course? Trying to get some more gearing ideas. Can run as much boost as i can handle, esc and end bell. Thinking of starting around 27/78, however, since the revtech is higher kv than my last few motors, thinking if i should go higher FDR.

Just curious, how much TOTAL timing (ESC and Endbell) can it handle? If anyone has pushed it.

BTW, its a awesome mix of color too (GOOO GATORS!!!)

With the stock rotor, start at about 3.50 rollout @ 3 tabs of timing, and 3.80 rollout at 2 tabs.

Many of my customers are using them, but gearing depends on layout, and how hooked up the vehicle/surface is. Start conservative, monitor temp, and trial and error from there.

Default Revtech 17.5 for 2wd sct

Does anyone have experience running the 17.5 in 2wd sct? I would like to hear some input on this motor. Also what does the 12.5 high torque rotor do and is it needed? I run a Tekin rs esc.
Thanks

Ive just dropped this in my SC10, right now running 27/78, 3+ notches on the can, full boost on ESC with small amount of turbo (12, 2 ramps).

Good motor, lots of power, lots of top end. Doesnt seem to get very hot. Ive got it to 150 with my current setup after 10mins.

Thinking of trying 27/75. My truck has lots of rip, but need that little bit for the long straight i have.
