As was I, but it looks like I will not be going. I can't afford to buy new brushless stuff just for this race, and then brushed for everything else.
Sooooo, run brushed stuff then Johnny. You dont have to have brushless to go this race. Its just opening the door for more racers that might not come because all they have is brushless/lipo. Brushed will still be competitive at the race.

Cactus is going to be the testing ground for what ROAR does with brushless and lipo from here on out. I'm sure thats why they are doing it. Afterall, Dawn Sanchez who owns SRS Raceway is the President of ROAR. She'll be watching closely at how the race pans out...

Just an update on how my batteries ended up doing after sitting for so long. An indoor dirt oval track opened up about 15 minutes from my house and their first practice was this past weekend. My EP4200's still had tons of pep although I can only get around 4000mah in them now. But the track is only 100ft down the straights and I'm running a Novak 13.5SS so had plenty of power and run time. I had charged one of my batteries on Thursday then ran it on Saturday with no additional charging and still ran for over 6 minutes. Love these cells.
Even with my 13.5 I still outran a majority of the mod truck guys since they couldnt control their faster mod motors. I still had plenty of traction for my speed so I was curious what my next step would be for a brushless motor to run in the mod class. Would something like a 10.5 or 8.5 still be controllable? I figured something around the 17T or 19T range would work perfect!
Thanks for all your help and good luck to all Slingshot drives this year!
The next step would be a 10.5 which they say is = to a 19T. 7.5 seems to be a popular 2wd buggy motor. They are runing 6.5 in trucks and 6.5-5.5 in 4wd. They run 5 cell with the lower turn motors as well to calm the bottom end.
Actually Ten, theres nothing "stock" about a stock motor . Banzai, Murfdogg, Birdman.......they all change the springs and brushes..and cut the comms to make them faster than how they originate from Epics production plant....soo really, its like going and buying a Honda, and then slapping on an exhaust, headers, and intake and saying that its "stock" too. A true stock motor, would have the springs and brushes that it came with when produced.
Actually "stock" motors from the factory do not come with springs or brushes. and the comms are cut to round. The pressing of the comm plates is not perfect so they do cut the comms in the factory to make them round.
Everyone including Trinity has to specify a brush and spring.
Stock can mean a lot of things. You can get a crate motor and this could be considered "stock"
I guess the thing that bothers me the most is can we run bearings in our stock motors now? Can we hand wind our stock motors as well? I know these are small things but the BL motors we will be running against at the cactus will have bearings and can be hand wound?

Valid points. I forgot that the motors come un-loaded from Epic. But all the motor co's still have the ability to "modify" the motor to their specs and make it run the way they want it to.
I agree, bearings and handwound may not be "stock" compared to what we traditionally consider stock, but its the way it comes from the factory and is for the most part un-alterable by the end user. The speed so far in off-road seems to be about the same as the current fast stock motors.
I guess we'll see what happens at Cactus, it'll be a good indicator of what mya come in the future for racing!

thats just it, about the same as the fastest stock brushed motor you can come by....... and then you cut it once and it could go down the tubes..... Bl is the same run after run.
my point is, if there gonna allow it, it should be at least the same speed as a brushed motor, it should'nt be the fastest stock motor ever.

I remember a time when you were all about lipo and brushless..... Ahhhhh, the good ole days..........
Your point is noted, however the fact is that they are allowing BL and lipos. Either we can all step up or not and not be competitive or not go at all...... The choice is up to you......

Well, with all the news in electric racing (especially the approaching 2008Cactus Calssic and JBRL season) I thought I would come on here and give some updates......
Many of you are concerned with what you will be running in the upcoming season. As of right now, we know that JBRL (and all of Jimmy's events with the exception of mod classes) will be run with NiMh cells and it looks like the same can be said for ROAR Nationals (I will know more about this in the coming weeks and will keep you all posted) so many of you will be running NiMh cells. As of right now, I see no advantage to running LiPo as the weight restrictions will still be in place and NiMh cells still work very well in our applications. The only advantage I see to LiPo right now is convenience and runtime (we can still make time in 6 minute mains and Team driver Bryan Duncan ran 10 minute mains at The JConcepts Clash last month finishing second with NiMh cells and brushed technology). So that being said, it looks like most will run NiMh cells for racing.
And some of you have seen them already, but we have begun testing LiPo packs from 2 very reputable companies. Currently we are testing 2 different MAH packs and we are looking to bring a product to market sometime before Nationals at Hot Rod Hobbies. Regardless of what product we choose, it will be a hardcase pack that will conform to whatever guidelines ROAR settles upon. We could bring something out now, but we want to make sure we offer a superior product that can carry the Slingshot Batteries name......
That being said, we have fresh cells coming from the manufacturer again late this month, and fresh stock in now, so if your looking for cells now is the time.... And team drivers, it's time to start thinking about your packs for the approaching season. If you guys get all your stuff before the Cactus, I'll be able to get some sleep this year. Last year saw a bunch of sleepless nights leading up to the Cactus and JBRL round 1 due to some of my procrastinating team drivers.......
Thank you to all my customers and team drivers for your support, it's truely appreciated.
