Pretty quiet in here so I thought I would do some updating... We are still hard at work matching cells and have started to get more national and international interest. We continue to carry the EP4200 and now also carry the E Power 4500's that have proven to be a great fit for the mod guys concerned about runtime. Should be a good year for racing as there will no lnger be issues with runtime in any classes.....

What's everybodies plans for the year??? I know locally it will be a busy year for Slingshot Batteries and it's drivers.................

Questions??

Guys I need some expert advice here concerning my three packs of EP4200's I bought from Slingshot last year. I unfortunately had to put RC stuff on the back burner for a few months due to work and other activities and didn't have the time to run or even charge/cycle my batteries for atleast two months. Over the holiday I dusted all my equipment back off hoping my batteries weren't junk.

I started out putting my batteries on my ICE and putting 800mah in them just to make sure they had some juice. I then put them on my Trinity DPD and Smart Tray at .9v to equalize them. When I put them back on my ICE at 5 amp (5mv peak detection) I was only able to get around 3800mah into the battery before it peaked and did the top off charge of 300mah. This is way down from when I was using my batteries on a semi-weekly basis where I would get well over 4000mah into them pretty easily.

I trayed them again thinking it might wake them up but my results where about the same. I borrowed a friends Indi discharger that goes down to .0v and then charged them again but I pretty much got the same results.

Before I shelved my stuff I had put 2400mah into each battery for storage. Did sitting that long possibly hurt a cell or do they just need the crap run out of them to wake them back up? I religiously practiced the charging and discharging tips found on the slingshot web page but didn't expect for the batteries to sit for as long as they did.

Hopefully they are not hurt and running them again will give them some life back. If not..well hopefully the wife ups my allowance.

The loss in runtime from the long storage is probably gone. This was the biggest issue with the older generation EP4200 cells. If the voltage in the cells dropped below about .7V the cells would loose runtime. I am not sure of a way to get it back. Pulse discharging on the PDP might help some. Also for future reference don't take the cells down to 0V like on a integy tray. These cells do not like going down that far. The good news is all the cells sound like they are still fine. The small loss in runtime should not effect on track performance unless you are running very long mains or 12th scale. Even with the loss of runtime we tend to see very little drop in AV and only a slight increase in IR. I would run the packs and see how they perform on the track before you get too worried.

Thanks for the darn quick reply Casper! (One of the main reasons I chose Slingshots is their awesome support system)

Other then the loss in mah I should be okay then. When I was racing off-road 1/10th electric truck I would normally have over 2000mah left after a 5 min main so run time has NEVER been an issue with these cells. Hopefully they aren't to flat and they can power my addiction a little bit longer.

Take care and hope everyone's New Year is starting out great!!

We do our best!

I have lots of packs that are low runtime. They work great. Getting a couple cycles on them like you have should wake them back up so they do not feel flat after the long storage. Again get them on the track and see how they feel. The small lose in runtime is all that we have experienced from this. The other issue is letting the voltage go too low can result in dead cells if they stay down too long but it sounds like you had the pack on the DPD and all cells are ok. You did everything right in bringing the pack back. The 800 mah in and then an equalization discharge was right on recomendation! Good luck in your return to the track!

Also just for information the new EPower 4500 seem to hold up much better to storage. The self discharge issues with those and the lastest 4200's seem to be much better.

I've got a couple of 4200's that are around 3800 also for the same reason (sitting around too long) I run them in 19t buggy and they are just fine, plenty of power and still have time left over.

I do have to get me some of those 4500's though for 4wd mod!! Right Casper?!

I have yet to get my hands on a set of the 4500's. I need to go see Keith!

I have heard nothing but good things about the new cells though.

Runtime in offroad is never an issue.

Have you even run the 4wd yet steve?
