The much anticipated RaceWorks Singapore Open Championship Series (ROCS) 2102 kicked-off its season opening event on 12 February 2012 at the newly refurbished RaceWorks Arena onroad circuit in the north of Singapore.

Group shot to start the day
3 classes were run at the event, attracting a total of 41 entries. In addition to the Open Modified and ORCA SuperStock (17.5T ramping) classes, the ORCA Spec (17.5T non-ramping) Class was run for the first time. Designed to attract hobbyists who were new to onroad racing, racers in the ORCA Spec Class were required to power their cars using the “blinky” mode in their ORCA Spark ESC and RX2 motor. A minimum final drive ratio (FDR) of 6.0 was also imposed to keep speeds manageable and place the focus on driver skills. This combination proved attractive as the class attracted a number of new racers.

Technical inspection - keeping everyone honest

With a new track layout featuring a tight infield, racers were looking forward to raceday. Qualifying got underway bright and early under clear skies. Hot and humid weather ensured that racers were challenged throughout the day in their search for traction.

First off for the finals was the ORCA Spec Class, where TQ holder 9-year old Dominic Quek wrapped up his first title of the season in convincing fashion by winning A1 and A2. Despite the close pursuit of Kevin Leiw at the start, Dominic managed to keep his cool in both legs and pulled away by the end for the wins. Dominic chose to start from the back of the grid for A3 to allow the other front runners a chance to battle for the podium. With Kevin Leiw almost assured of overall 2nd, only Joo Kiah could deny Kevin the 2nd position with a win A3. In the end, Kenji drove a great race to take the win in A3, while surprise package, Jonathan Ho, pipped Joo Kiah by 0.4 secs to take 2nd spot. This allowed Kenji to wrap up the final step on the podium. The final results for the ORCA Spec Class were:-
1st Dominic Quek (Xray) 20 pts
2nd Kevin Leiw (Xray) 18 pts

In the ORCA SuperStock Class, Nicholas Lee, who recently took the Tamiya GT-A World Championship win in Japan, put in a classy performance and wrapped up the overall win by taking commanding victories in A1 and A2. A3 was to feature a shootout between 4 drivers for the remaining 2 podium spots. Young gun, Daryl Thong, displayed steady hands in A3, withstanding strong pressure from Leonard Sim to maintain his slender lead during the final. Daryl eventually took the win in A3 and 2nd overall. Dimas finished 3rd in A3, and just managed to keep Leonard off the podium by a mere 0.8 secs on the tiebreak.

Starting from pole position, Nicholas Lee was expected to also take the Open Modified class in convincing fashion. However, he was soon to face a strong challenge from PY Tang in A1 when Tang took the lead on the first lap when Nicholas struggled to find traction early on. While pulling away, Tang made a small driving mistake resulting in him clipping a track barrier and breaking his steering link. Nicholas regained the lead and sailed away to the win in A1. In A2, Nicholas maintained his lead at the start but Tang clearly had the faster car. Tang’s patience was rewarded when he made a good pass to take the lead from Nicholas. Unfortunately the steering link “gremlins” struck Tang again, when the same link gave way after contact with another car. Nicholas coasted to victory in A2 and the overall win. Nicholas sat out A3 and the battle for the remaining podium spot was between Chee Lip Keong, Jason Lee and Dimas. This time round, Tang managed to maintain his lead and took the win in A3. Jason finished 2nd and took overall 2nd, while Chee finished overall 3rd.
