Hullo,
if you're going for races there, get a letter from the race organiser. I'm sure they will accomodate such requests. If you don't wan't the hassle of getting checked up. If you drive, Go thru the "green lane" on the left handside of JB customs. but do prepare yourself coz they might pick cars to check in random.
JB customs got wind lah.. good wind they let you go, bad wind they trouble you. But, by the book, electronics are taxable items. Word of advice, talk nicely lah. my experience there so far is hassle free, I drive thru the 'green lane' without trouble.... yet

Like someone said, get a letter/entry from the organiser.
Draft a declaration form stating what you are bringing in. Car, equipment, controller, charger and spares. Get this chop and verify with the customs. No more than 10 mins normally. As M'sian we got the same problem too. So this is what we do. With this, it actually serve the purpose.
The green lane thing. There are pro and cons. Random check you are dead.
So proceed thru the proper channel and they will understand your objective. So no hassle really. Be tactful. JB already expose to this hobby already, most of the customs already know what it is.
So no biggie unless you doesn't follow the procedure.

Just get a print out like on A4 paper, put down your name and pasport number also.
For fun also no problem lah. Most importantly is get it in black and white, it just show you are not selling your stuff there.
But still be tactful. The customs normally on a mood. So if you treat them with respect, they will do the same to you. If you take away their dignity, they will do the same.
