Was just reading a Interview with Scott Hughes at the Proline race and he mentioned Using 2 Diff gaskets in his Diffs , has any body tryed this??

i will be having my MBX-5R in the next couple of weeks and hope that my ride would'nt look like that after a race i might faint if that happens to me

I used to use one diff gasket and never had a problem with the diffs leaking. But now I use two gaskets and the diffs just feel a lot smoother. Always use 3x12mm flat heads on the diffs instead of the stock 3x8mm flat heads. This will ensure they don't leak at the diff gaskets. Then use a lot of grease on the outdrives and S5 o-rings.

i have barrel rolled my prospec for 10 yardsand hydroplaned flipped my mbx5-r at hgh speed and they didnt look like that or even break anything

Thanks Tony , Will give it a try , don't really have any problems with leaks but they could be a bit smoother .

did you find you needed to change to a thicker oil with this extra gasket??

I wouldn't think you'd need to use a heavier oil, but maybe fill it up a touch more than normal to fill up the little extra volume.

My diffs do feel like the mesh may be a little tight and two gaskets would do the trick. Unfortunately I just rebuilt all three diffs a few days ago. Next time though

How long do the gears last with 2 gaskets? A friend of mine did that last year with his jammin truggy to try and get a diff to stop leaking and it would just destroy the internal gears within a couple of tanks of fuel.

Build them with 1 gasket and see if the gears turn freely, if not, add a gasket. The other way to guarantee that they don't leak is to lightly flat sand the edges of the diff cups with 200+ grit sandpaper. The two gasket thing was originally done to reduce break in time. My MBX-5 gears were in great shape after 2 1/2 seasons of use.

I personally prefer to run one gasket and let the car break in. After that you'll have a much stronger and more consistent diff. Whether you can tell the difference, I am not sure. I just don't see the point it the two gasket thing. My old buggy that a friend of mine drives is over 3 years old with lots and lots of racing and the diffs felt horrible brand new. I just broke them in changed the oil and they were dynamite! They are still as good as new.

So, I don't know.. If you're in it for the long run I would suggest running one gasket and breaking them in. If you get new cars all the time... who cares! The two gasket setup will get your diffs feeling nice right away.

I always ran only one gasket. I did not about the 2 gasket trick when the car was new so the gears just broke in. I used cal-nitro o-rings on the outdrives though, that and a good coat of grease kept them pretty leak free. I could see using two if the flat sanding trick caused the mesh to get tighter too.

It's funny that Mugen diffs had a rep for leaking. With the shims that can be used to adjust them and the quality of the gears you'd think these things would have been celebrated!
