Guys,

What kind of track you all racing on that you will need a 14t and 17t pinion!?!?!?
It must be a track that dosn't have a strait-away or not a very big one!!

Well, sometimes lower pinions are necessary... The tracks do have straightways but they are sometimes no more than 120 feet long.

Think about it... Reflex, V1R and the MTX-3 cars have stock internal drive ratios of 2.53 compared to the Serpent's internal drive ratio of 2. For the MTX-3, pair this up with the stock 16T/20T pinions and 47T/43T spurs, you end up with 7.42 and 5.43 final drive ratios respectively for the 1st and 2nd gears.

Compare this to our lowest possible final drive ratios (assuming using stock pulleys) of 6.67 and 5.11 using 15T/18T pinions and 50T/46T spurs, the Mugen's have more acceleration out of the corners or from standstill.

Yes, for long straight tracks, the Serpents sure dominate but for short tracks, it'll be tough. Tracks on this side of the world are unfortunately on the shorter side.

So using the optional 22T/47T and 17T pulleys, this will effectively translate the 15T/18T pinions to something like 14T/17T with 7.12 and 5.46 final drive ratios. If the 14T and 17T pinions are physically available and using stock 23T/46T and 18T pulleys, final drive ratios are 7.14 and 5.41 respectively using 50T/46T spurs.

I think personally, most of the time the Serpent 705 / Impulse is always overgeared for most tracks. Even on super large tracks like the one in Ohio where the worlds were held, there is absolutely no problems with regards to having enough gear. I think the problem is always looking for the lowest gear possible on tight tracks with the Impulse / 705.

I think I mentioned about how a friend's 3 port turbo STS RS3 mod engine on an Impulse with the optional internal pulleys and 13T/16T fixed pinions on an old Centax clutchbell with 50T/45T spurs (which effectively gives about 8.22 and 6.01 final drive ratios) that outran a 5 port Rody tuned on a Reflex on the straights, out of the corners and in the infield

Thnaks,
You just sold a good car

No doubt, the NTC3 is a good car and handles good out of the box but seriously, the 705 is much more durable and can take a heavier beating than the NTC3. Well that's my opinion and many 705 users can testify to that...

With the front one way diff that comes stock with the 705, it will be more difficult to drive than the front and rear ball diff equipped NTC3. If you haven't driven a car equipped with a one way front diff, you need to change your drivng style. The 705 itself needs to be built correctly and it is very sensitive to tweak. Once that is set right, it's only a matter of playing around with the droop settings and the shocks. Once that is set, the rest is tire selection, caster and front sway bar settings.

Personally, I will not hide the fact that the Serpent 705 / Impulse will have a steeper learning curve than the NTC3. But once set correctly, you have a world beater car in your hands. Good luck in whatever car you choose

Default Protoform Bodies

Do any of you guys have any problems fitting protoform bodies to your 705? I'm in the process of painting a protoform civic, and the wheel wells don't match up at all. I think it may be the front bumper that's pushing the body back. The wheel wells are about a half inch off.

Any suggestions to this problem would be great. I know the HPI bodies don't line up, but I thought the protoform bodies were supposed to fit nicely.

Default Gear Ratio / Setup Sheet

InitialD,
I completely agree with your opinions on the gearing issue !!!
Unfortunately here in Arizona I actually ran a 12/15 using the old clutch set-up because our straightaway is only approx 100 + ft long. It is basically an Electric Car set up, however it is fun.

When we make it over to California to race the Crystal Park Track and the Ron Paris/Speedline Race each year in Vegas, I still never utilize a higher gear than a 15/18 on the Centax Set-up.

I think Serpents always have been hard to get to rock and roll off of the start or out of the corners.
Beleive me , I've had Toffelmire, Tennesee, Baker, etc... Help out with Clutch set-ups, engines (currently using the Novamega SX 12 RE MS engine) and although it makes up for some of the low end I am looking for I am still wanting a 13 or 14 tooth gear if at all possible.

As far as the link to the Set up sheets you mentioned, Ive been to that page 5 times and still do not see where the set up sheet is located for download, any Ideas ???? where to look.
All I see is this :

14.2.2003 EFRA 1/10 I.C. 200mm Touring Car rules 11 kB DOWNLOAD!
14.2.2003 IFMAR 1/10 I.C. 200mm Sedan rules 16 kB DOWNLOAD!
29.1.2003 Serpent 705 Reference guide (pdf) 286 kB DOWNLOAD!
22.1.2003 Partslist S-705 ev2 67 kB DOWNLOAD!
6.1.2003 Serpent 705 Manual (pdf) 1 MB DOWNLOAD!

Nothing about a PDF file for a set up sheet >>>

Thx
Scott

With the setup up sheet, I had the very same problem.....until I logged in!! Seems you can't see the file until you log yourself in.

ammdrew: the link you gave for the winternats video doesn't seem to lead to a valid page. Could you tell me where you found the video?

Cheers, Mark.
