Hey,

What material are the hingepins in the Surikarn Ed.?

If they are Ti, I'll just get some steel ones....I hit the timing & scoring "bridge" & bent one...Currently I'll just live with it but I have plans on replacing it sometime

The hingepins are steel and they are relatively inexpensive (less than 10 bucks for a whole set). I would suggest that you replace your bent ones. Your car will not handle consistenly with bent hingepins.

How does one prepare the gears in the gear box? Dry or a certain lube?

Hingepins are chromed mild steel - FOR A REASON.

Do not replace them with stiffer material eg Ti or StainlessSteel.
If you do, next time you smack you'll break your hinge carriers
instead of just bending a hingepin.

Tamiya original hingepins are amazingly dirtcheap... $5/set??
(that's cheaper than TA04, TL01 sets etc)
Don't even try straightening it - I have, it'll never be fixed perfect.
Have at least a dozen still-bent ones on my workbench, none
will ever go back to a new pin's straightness.


If you break the hingpin carrier... you'll be up for $50 in parts.
'Cos you'll lose the bell end-thingy too, the spacers, new arm...
and you'll still bend whatever hingepin you've used.

I broke the Titanium screw INSTEAD of the hinge carriers on this hit

I have a backup plan if I ever break a hinge carrier anyway...That also happened to be the ONLY time I hit anything other than this one dot in the infield...unfortunetly, it had to be a cinder block

$5! I doubt it in my area....I'll just run the bent one until I can buy a replacement at the shop...

I usually keep a whole swag of them... right next to my stash of 1-way spurs...

Does it really up-set handling a lot running a bent hingeppin?

It could take a while to get one....Plus, my car was handling good

I usually buy 3 packages at a time. if you get them from rainbow Ten they are less than $4 bucks a set. if you order enough little things its a great deal even with shipping.

Too bad they don't just sell the hinge pins that we all bend I am starting to get a huge collection of brand new never used hinge pins for the up rights.

Why do you want a lower drive ratio?
I think only difference will be you have to use different pinion size with the motor.
Regarding performance there will be no fifference.

does tamiya have a new one way gear or did i just have some from the first batch of cars. I just recieved my new gears and they're different from the ones that I got with the car(used). They have a lip on the back side of the gear I guess so the back plate fits in the gear. The ones I had before looked just like the rear diff gear(like the pic below) but with a different hole lay out. And after looking at the new gear again it looks like the whole outside edge of the gear is thicker now. Its atleast a 1/16" thicker than a diff gear.Below is what the gears that I had looked like. I'll take a pic of the new one tonight.

I just got a bunch of those thicker ones too... I cant use the Peniguin backing plate anymore because of it. Im thinking of shaving them down some so I can get the plate back on there...

That and lower final drive will reduce strain on the motor (I think)
