Triton RC new engine...
#513
Im asking because the couple clips I've seen of the l4 running it just looks wicked fast. Are they as smooth as everyone seems to be saying? I'm looking for a new buggy engine but I like smooth controllable power that will hold its own down the straight with the best of them.

And yes they are very fast engines, one of, if not the fastest of road engine on the market.
Fuel economy is top shelf and almost all of the people who have run them have reported better mileage compared to engines they previously ran.
A lot of time when you hear smooth people think Weak or soft. The L4 is not weak at all but it just has a powerband that was designed to be very smooth so power can be more accurately controlled.
But if you need the power just squeeze the throttle and the more you pull the more power you get. Most know most other engines out there are very on and off and the powerband kicks in hard, all at once and that can make you blow the tires out when trying to time difficult set and rythym sections. I call it the "conventional powerband" .
The Triton L5 leans more toward the "conventional type powerband but is still more driveable than a lot of other engine for the guys who like a harder hitting more conventional feel.
And yes the L4 and L5 have a lot of top end speed especially the L4. It will smoke most all other engines down the straight.

Stock L5 with a 2046 pipe all the power you need, in both buggy and truggy.

I had a chance to get on the track with the L4 and L5 engines. I tuned them on along the back straight a little and headed to the drivers stand. Tune in was very fast and precise. They are both still tight and need more fuel through them but initial testing was very strong. I never wanted Mrs power or needed anything more from them. The L4 took my buggy around the track easily and hit every jump. Down the back straight it started to reall open up. I think it has more to give though. The 1 thing I noticed coming from OS was the strong midrange the triton has. Where I mostly use the engine is where it shines.
The L5 is the truck was very much the same as above. Every time they come into pit they idle right down and go. I did some setup on my truck and was able to shave 2-3 Sec off my lap time. Again the engine is still tight but pulling the trigger makes for a nice easy drive.
Initial impression is great... More to come...
