Why did Durango introduce the 14mm hubs in the first place?

Has there ever been a problem with the "standard" hubs?

I know lots of people who have had issues with pin drives, but usually from being slightly careless. Pin drives punish you if you don't pay attention.

I reckon they just went 14 because they didn't want other people to be able to fit 12mm wheels on

It seems like the logical choice to me.
Where is 4wd the biggest - Europe
Whats the most popular car in 4wd in Europe - Durango
Making it easier for people to switch and rims are plentifully available at the hobby shop.

Just my 2 cents

There truly isn't a "wheel standard" every company is different when comes to 1/10th 4 wheelers.

rear
AE B44,B44.1: pin
AE B44.2: 12mm hex
Losi XX4, XXX-4: pin
TRF 501x,511x,502x: pin
HB D4: 12mm hex
K-car lazer: 12mm hex
Team C T4: 12mm hex
Dingo: 14mm hex
yokomo B-MAX:???

Front
AE B44,B44.1: .375in/9.5mm hex
AE B44.2: .375in/9.5mm hex
Losi XX4, XXX-4: .375in/9.5mm hex
TRF 501x,511x,502x: .375in/9.5mm hex
HB D4: 12mm hex
K-car lazer: 12mm hex
Team C T4: 12mm hex
Dingo: 14mm hex
yokomo B-MAX:???

I'm not sure about the schumacher SX2/SX3 but the older cat 3000 used to be 14mm hex.

Ok.
I thought that 12mm hex had more or less become the industry standard, like 1/8 buggies all use the samme hex.

But I hope there are no special offset needed, so we can at least use other manufacturers rims on the XB4.

Which companies make rims with 14mm hex then?

I like the DE-Racing Burrego rims on my Dex410v3

if you have to buy wheels, whats it matter what the hex is? b/c it doesn't say JC or PL on the rim? sell off your old tires or bake them off the rim when you switch cars if you have them existing.. its a hobby be prepared to spend spend spend

AE, Losi, kyosho, Tamiya, Team C, and Hotbodies use the same offset front and rear. I haven't measured durango wheels, but I'm willing to bet they are the same.

I wish the industry would pick a wheel standard and stick with it (hopefully 12mm)! I couldn't tell you how many front small hex losi xx4/xxx-4 and AE B44 wheels and pin drive rear wheels I've stripped over the years.

My understanding is that Durango picked 14mm because they needed the extra surface area of a 14mm hex over a 12mm hex to prevent stripping the wheels. (At least, this is what I was told, don't know if it's true or not).

12mm is obviously pretty common, especially on touring cars, but I think the "culprit" here is Traxxas...

Originally, Slashes were 12mm hexes, when AE and Losi came out with the SC10 and Strike, they were both pin drives, but conversions became popular because everyone wanted to use Traxxas wheels they already had on their cars. Then it sort of extended to the other classes, like 2wd buggy with the hex conversions... and now the B44.2 has 12mm.

Even in the 12mm world, offsets are different between manufacturers... i.e. the offsets on AE 2wd buggy wheels is different than the TLR buggy wheels. And maybe yet another difference with another manufacturer... So I don't think standardization is going to happen, or help, because the offsets will still be different.

only the front wheels on the 2wd buggies are different between the XXX and b4, rears has been the same since 2003.

Today's RB5/RB6 and AE B4 12mm front and rear wheels are interchangeable with the same offset.

Just last week I measured the depth of the hexes on an AE wheel versus a TLR wheel, and the AE wheel was 1mm deeper, so it would've reduced my track width by 2mm overall.

If the wheels are the same, why do companies like JConcepts and DE Racing make different wheels for TLR vs AE?
