I would start at a 3.7 and go from their, make sure you have a fan blowing on the motor.

Check with your local track and see if they are running set gearing. Here, we're running 5.0 and the cars are plenty fast. This Summer, with open gearing, most were running 4.0. That seemed about perfect for this class.

It is track size and layout dependent. 4.0 is usually a safe starting point. You also should not have to make any major modofications to run a 4.0 in a TC3. You are toeing the line at grinding some of the chassis webbing away under the pinion (to fit a larger one). The next mod to lower your FDR more involves grinding the motor cam so the motor can be closer to the driveshaft (smaller spur fitment). If you get that far, be careful of an on motor heatsink or fan rubbing the shaft.

TC3/4's are a little difficult to get the FDR down lower for brushless, since the internal ratio is 2.5. You have to go with a pretty small spur. In 48 pitch gearing, I would suggest this spur since it is fairly easy to find and would be a good place to start:

In 64 pitch, something in the 82-86 tooth range would probably be a good target as well. We run 4.2 in our local VTA since we run 21.5's. So, I run a 84/50 spur/pinion. Like this:

Note: You will likely have to grind the chassis supports under the pinion gear to allow the large 64p pinions enough clearance.

ok sounds like most people are running around 4-4.5 the chassis and motor cam are both grounded down from the prior owner so thanks on the tip about the heat sink. anthony is your car running hot with that gearing?
