Pulse/Linear NiCd problems
Hi. I'm breaking in some new brushes using a standard motor conditioner.
When I charge a pack of NiCds on Linear at 5amps, it runs the motor at 2000rpm. When I charge the same pack of NiCds on Pulse at 5amps, it runs the motor at 3000rpm, and also runs the motor about twice as long! I checked twice, with 2 different battery packs. Why is this happening? And does this mean I should charge my NiCds on Pulse from now on?

Which charger? How old are the NiCd's? And how many charges have these NiCd's gone through?

Yeah, but pulse charging is not pulse charging, even though different charger brand calls them the same.... I had a pulse charger, which actually performed well, also on the track. Thus, I'm curious. And there might be different answers to the same question

What does "run flat" mean?
The charger is a Novak Digi Peak Plus. Here are the operating instructions http://www.teamnovak.com/Download/ac...gipeak_ins.pdf It's in .pdf format so it may take a while to load on dial-up. The batteries are about 6 months old and have been charged maybe 25 times.

well if it is a idgi peak, dont use pulse.... the linear is much better for the cells...
flat when i used it above means no punch.. its a term we use in rc to describe a lack of power.. the car moves and runs,, but it just doesnt have the snap out of a turn it would with a diff charge, or pack..

There are at least two kind of pulse charging:
One, where the charge goies on for a certain time, then interrupted by a short discharging, the charge, then discharge and son on.
The other is where the charge swithes on and off all the time. Some chargers do this at frequencies at 300 Hz. So if you charge at lets say 5 amps, this is an average amp-rate, because of the pauses and when the charge is on, it's at an higher rate than 5 amps.
I cant see in the above mentioned manual, which type this Novak pulse charge is (have I overlooked something?). Personally, I've had good results with the last type of pulse charging, also at the track.
The first one, I mentioned, I believe is intended for maintenance use, like 1 pulse charge, 10 linear, 1 pulse and so on...
If I were you, I would simply try both methods, and see what works best on the track. You can also write to Novak, and see what they suggest.

It doesn't say (that being the part that is providing my confusion). I think I will just spend the money and get a new charger and get a pack or 2 of NIMH. Hey, only 100-150 dollars for some batteries that are worth to retail at half their price and a box with some technology that has been around for decades now! Oh well, atleast it's not a Macintosh
