Parts arent cheap, but its something where I feel I got what I paid for, and in general I am not one who blindly follows that rule.
As an example, my daughters second outing with your VTA Xray she banged a board and broke a rear hub carrier. One of the reasons in the early days of touring cars is I still remember up-armoring my TC3 with nerf wings, etc to save the rear hub carriers that snapped if you looked at them funny. So I thought it was a bit odd.
Well, when I went to tear it down the previous owner had replaced the carriers with Spec-R ones. Now, no knock on the vehicle as I have no first hand knowledge of it other than what I have read and I did buy some body mounts that work on the xray to save alittle there and those have been working fine. But feeling the carrier in comparison to the xray carrier that granted is much more $$$ I could tell there was a difference for sure, and swapped her vehicle over to xray parts as far as the carrriers go.
So far though, rest of the car looks to be basically be all xray and she has really enjoyed her time with it. the singular spec-r carrier now has its own place to hang out in the parts box lol.
As a side question, with the whole 1/8 GT thing taking off, when I look at my 1/10 VTA stuff I always wondered what it would be like to run a 1/8 E Buggy based vehicle but in VTA style look? Has anyone heard of anything like that being done?

To add to everyone else's input on what chassis to choose, consider a car that is being used successfully by others at the track. Setup and parts support by your peers is priceless.
There were one or two guys in our club that wanted to do a "bomber" class based on the GT8 platforms. Not only would it include nitro and ebug based cars, but converted SC trucks and 1/8 rally cars could join in on the action, too. Never quite took off. The one guy really wanted have a class to run the '55 Chevy Slash body:

t3 2011 can be found for that kind of money, 2012 for a few more bucks but if the t3r is in really good shape it's not a bad deal. I think any Xray is going to be a bit better than a out of the box tc4 club. Money can make the tc4 a killer car of course. Durability still swings in the favor of Xray IMO. Parts cost more but you break less of them...

I just put together a VBC ghost and it went together really well. For under $300 after buying the sway bar kits and springs its a great deal. It came with extra shock pistons and has tons of tuning options out of the box. Its alittle more $$$ than some used kits, but you get a new kit that you built. I really enjoy the thrill of opening a new kit and putting it all together.
Also I know the TC4 is a great starter car, but does it come with threaded shocks? Ive seen several tc 4s at my local track the still use the collar spacers. This seems like a bad way to work on set-up. I know getting threaded shocks is the first upgrade these guys are going to get.

I think you will be happier going that route. Again, I see the '11 on Ebay for 130-150 and the '12 being just slightly more. Everyone used to complain that Xray put out new cars too often but I say bring the new ones out, it just means that the "have to have the newest" crowd will be dumping low-mileage examples of the previous gen car on the FS threads and Ebay for a good price. A couple of bearing here and there and a rebuild should be all that you need to do at most to have a top level car for entry-kit (new) prices.
