Ed from EB Mods posted up a while back that he had a tool to do it. Haven't seen or used it myself so no idea how it works.

I have seen messure tools mounted on the place where the plug is screwed but I would not trust it due tolerances and production differences.

With flat pistons you can use a caliper but still the solder trick is a fast and the best way.
