Jon, you did not hatch from an egg, you started out as a group of cells. All things being equal, chickens probably started out as a group of cells too, which probably grew into a chicken, not an egg, because chickens lay eggs. I don't believe the initial group of cells could have formed an egg shell, there would be no reason for it. But hey, I could be wrong. Let the games begin...

Acutally....
Def. Egg
1. a) A female gamete; an ovum. Also called egg cell.
b) The round or oval female reproductive body of various animals, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, and insects, consisting usually of an embryo surrounded by nutrient material and a protective covering.
c) The oval, thin-shelled reproductive body of a bird, especially that of a hen, used as food.
A lack of a shell is not necessarily something that precludes where a cell or is an egg or not.

So by this logic at some point proto-chickens got busy and had live young, then soft shell reptilian eggs and finally the hard eggs we see today. That makes sense....excellent!
This makes sense from a female survival standpoint. Pregger chickens may have been more vulnerable to predators. Popping out eggs and stashing them was a better survival option.

This is what I like to see! A self-sustaining conversational cycle that doesn't need A Creator to take charge and set order to everything all the time!

As a Creator of sorts I think it would be in bad form if I gave up this little "trade secret"

That's a good thought to ponder Adrian, however, being that chickens are not mammals, they probably never gave live birth. I just figure the first chickens that started makin' sweet love to each other just laid eggs. But, unfortunately, I am not the creator(if one exists, but that is another topic completely) of this amazing planet so I really don't know. Sure is fun debating it though.
