I still have a bag full of spur gears. I wish I had the fiberglass schumacher 1/12th scale car that they let me try out.

they loved racing with my brother, the infamous Maximum Overdrive John I.

Why is it that the single "laydown" shock up front never became the norm for 12th? . I never actually raced 12th until the 2000's but it seems that type of suspension is still more advanced than what is run at the moment... were there issues or disadvantages to the laydown configuration?

The Corally car had to use certain style/shape pinion gear. I thought spur gear was just same as kimbrough's generic 64 pitch ones, but I'll double check tonight when I get home. Also, I remember that back in the old days Corally tires were pre-mounted and pre-trued out of the package which was kind of luxurious thing to have haha. As for my club racer rc12L, I was using lots of TRC foams in early - mid 90s

Also Delta used "more advanced" front ends on their 1/12th and 1/10th cars but all of these were too heavy and complicated. The only lightweight advanced frontend was the one used with the Schumacher C-Car.

Actually there is a current car with an advanced front end what is the Yokomo R12. The question just is, is it fast because of that frontend or in spite of this.
There are different opinions.

That front suspension was designed and constructed in small quantities by Steve ODonnell for Team Associated. I believe he was still in high school when that project was done and it was used in a World Championships held in Florida. I don't recall who the drivers where except that Steve did make the A in that event. Steve was an exceptional guy and Associated was very smart to have him do all the prototyping during those days. In my opinion Thunder Tiger ruined all of that.

I remember having an RC mag BITD that did a feature on a delta car, was the sweetest looking pan car I had ever seen at that point. If it works, it works (current style)... from a technical standpoint you would think that an oil filled damper would be better than just springs sliding on a metal rod .

Your are right about the pinions. They had a long boss because the motor was centered in the car and the spur gear was way over by the tire. They also made some pinions in 64 pitch with the long boss. I still have packages of tires that have not been removed from their sanitary environment. Gold and Silver were the hardness designations. I loved those cars.

Goldstar & Silverstar were the compound I was running. There were others that cleaned up Corally rims and mount purple and grey/white from proline/jaco on them. Cleaning the rims were painful because Corally roughup the surface before gluing their form tires.

Most of the R12s running they use the shock for dampening only now and have a spring for each arm. The BMI Copperhead12 has an optional front end that is very similar. Those are the only 2 I know of that are running a double wishbone front suspension.

It's interesting that Kyosho is offering 1/12 gas pan car. A step further away from the traditional 1/12 pan class.
